ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Career choices and the environment were among the top issues for discussion among secondary school students and staff of the Town and Country Planning Department at yesterday’s November 10, 2011 poster display at the Central Administration Complex.

According to the department, the poster display was in observance of World Town Planning Day, which was celebrated on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 under the theme ‘Going Public: Spaces in our Communities’ and to highlight the valuable contributions town planning has made to the quality of life and the environment of the Virgin Islands.

The response from the public according to Chief Planner Mrs. Marva Titley-Smith, was lacking but she was pleased that schools such as the Seventh Day Adventist’s School and Cedar School were able to send students to the display to learn about what the department was all about and what career choices were available there. Among the professionals that the students learned were needed for effective Town Planning were Urban Designers, Surveyors, Lawyers, Architects, Environmental Planner, Enforcement Officers and Geographic Systems Information Officers.

Mrs. Titley-Smith told Virgin Islands News Online that there was a particular need for more Urban Planners and Architects in the Virgin Islands.

The Chief Planner had also said she had hoped to see the newly elected members of Government at the display but said she could have understood their absence since yesterday was their first official day on the job.

World Town Planning Day is celebrated in 30 countries on four continents each November 8. According to the American Planning Association (APA), it is a special day to recognise and promote the role of planning in creating livable communities. Additionally, it is a day which allows stakeholders to look at planning from a global perspective, and members are encouraged to consider planning challenges and solutions around the globe on that day.

Thanks for sharing this great idea regarding urban planning. According to my opinion Urban planning can be described as a technical and political process concerned with the welfare of people, control of the use of land, design of the urban environment including transportation and communication networks, and protection and enhancement of the natural environment.

I think urban planning play an important role to change physical and economical. Urban design concerns the arrangement, appearance and functionality of towns and cities, and in particular the shaping and uses of urban public space.
