‘NDP Members unruly in HoA’ – Hon Fahie
He made the remarks while speaking during the Fourth Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Second House of Assembly on Friday March 13, 2015. At the time he was addressing the members of the Government benches while debating a motion brought by Government to borrow $16 million from the Social Security Board to fund road repairs.
“Some of the members when they get up to speak… the unruly manner in which they address us over here. I'm not going to get no high blood pressure over a soul in here because I know who I am and I know whose I am,” he said. “They have enough control to stay where they are and just express their anger and not cross over the aisle,” he said.
“Sometimes I get the impression if they get something to pitch over here they would...the way that I see the conduct in this house...we could agree to disagree. And if I'm going to be called public enemy number one for representing future generations the way I see best Madam Speaker we're not operating in a democracy…we operating in dictatorship," he said.
“But I thank God that we on this side of the aisle will do our best to ensure that democracy reigns because I always say that wrong cannot be made right depending on who you love and right cannot be made wrong depending on who you hate,” he said.
“I want to know whether this Government will shut off this House of Assembly without bringing the extra expenditures to the House and many other financial transactions that should have been here before,” he said.
He said that if the roads were that important the Government would have made earlier provisions for them. “I am not questioning whether the project should have been done or not, at least not at this time, I am not questioning whether the project had value for money…at least not at this time. But I am sure that they were not budgeted and those that were budgeted I know for sure that the full amount was not budgeted for,” he said.
Leader of the Opposition Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal OBE (R9) said that the members in the House should not resort to throwing words.
“I sat here and I listened, I heard and I understand and I know when people are throwing words, and I do not think that we should resort to that…I know Premier Dr Smith from a long time and if we are discussing a matter, we discussed it; I have my point of view and he has his, but we do not quarrel and it is the same thing with Dr Pickering...I do not throw words at nobody, I do not have time for that, I do not think the dignity of the House should be disturbed like that," said Honourable O’Neal, speaking in the House on Friday, March 13, 2015.
He said further that “If people have something throw out then call names, call the member by district but do not say on that side, that means everybody.”
Hon O'Neal said too that when the government comes with “something that is for the people and the country, I am prepared to say yes that is a good idea and in favour...If you have difficulties, you suggest a change, but that does not mean you are against it.”
