NDP has done nothing for last 2 years - Hon J. Alvin Christopher
The decision of the VIP opposition members not to attend the sitting of the Honourable House for the budget debate was one made on the ground of “a whole series of things,” in the words of Hon. Christopher. He noted that over the past two years of being at the helm of the Territory’s leadership the NDP government has done absolutely nothing.
“The Government hasn’t really done anything for us in the last two years. We complained about having the debates on the day of the Agriculture Exhibition and they give us a schedule at the beginning of the standing finance make these days clear so that we can go into our different districts and participate in the agriculture fair,” said Hon Christopher.
Hon Christopher said it took the VIP membership by surprise when without any consultation with them the NDP stretched out their usual ‘high-handed undemocratic’ behaviour and changed the date to suit their personal convenience. “… but I think we finished early and they changed the date to their convenience because some of the members want to leave the Island. So without consultation or any discussions they chose to change it to their convenience, so we decided not to go,” said Hon. Christopher.
“They don’t do anything for us, we don’t have anything in the budget to get so what we have is the people so we associate ourselves with [the people] so I don’t expect to see the Leader of the Opposition there today or tomorrow because I wouldn’t be there,” he added.
As it relates to Third District Representative Honourable Julian Fraser’s presence at the sitting of the House Hon. Christopher said that this was agreed upon collectively. “It was clear to us that he wanted to make a statement so we understand that from the onset and we respected that, so we expected him to make the statement and leave,” Hon. Christopher said. Hon. Fraser walked out of the proceedings in the House of Assembly yesterday Monday February 10, 2014 saying that he was not going to participate in what he called a charade.
Leader of the VIP and Representative for the Ninth District Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal OBE said that he had informed through due process that he was not going to be present for the Fourth Sitting of the Third Session of the Second House of Assembly.
Asked if he was going to be present as stated by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, Hon O’Neal said that he has not made any decision about attending the sitting today February 11, 2014. “I cannot say at this time, I will make that decision before the night is over, I have not made any decision if I am going to attend tomorrow,” said Hon O’Neal.
The VIP leader acknowledged knowing of the walk-out by Member for the Third District Honourable Julian Fraser, RA but he offered no further comment. “Yes I did hear about it but you know that’s it.”
