ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Hon Stacy R. Mather, MBE (AL), applauded the National Unity Government, which was formed in 2022, following the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) and the threat of the Order in Council.

The National Unity Government was a coalition established to ensure stability, handle urgent reforms, and address recommendations from the CoI report regarding governance.

Members of the National Unity Government took their oaths in Mary 2022 and included Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R9), Premier and Minister of Finance; Hon Kye M, Rymer (R5), Deputy Premier and Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8), Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2), Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Hon Sharie D de Castro (AL), Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports, Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines (R6), Junior Minister for Tourism, and Hon Shereen D. Flax-Charles (AL), Junior Minister for Trade and Economic Development.

They showed they could meet in the middle- Hon Mather

“A lot has been said about the members who were in the Unity Government. I must admit, I was sceptical about this Unity Government thing,” Hon Mather said during the Fourth Sitting of the Third Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) on March 19, 2026.

The special sitting was in recognition of the revocation of the Order in Council on March 13, 2026, by the United Kingdom (UK).

Hon Mather, who was not in government at the time, said he was not sure if the National Unity Government would work, whether political divisions and people who said things about each other from across the aisle could work together.

“But Mr Speaker, they did, they showed that despite sitting on one side of the aisle, and the other side of the aisle, they could meet in the middle and make things happen for the country. I applaud them for that.”

    Oh dear.

Mather has truly gone to the dark side.

At one time our only hope.
