ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- She didn’t advance from the heats, but 16 year old swimmer Elinah Phillip can be happy that she did her very best on debut at the Olympic Games as she swam to a personal best and national record in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil today, August 12, 2016.

Phillip, swimming in Lane 8, recorded a time of 26.26 in the 50m freestyle to place third in Heat 6 of 12, behind Karen Torrez of Bolivia (26.16) and Naomi Ruele of Botswana (26.23).

The teenager’s time was also the third fastest time for Caribbean women’s swimmers for the 50m freestyle heats at the Rio Olympics today.

Phillip’s time was a personal best and national record but it was still not good enough to make it in the top 16 as she ended up placing 44th from a field of 88 swimmers.

Unlike track events, swimmers qualify only through fastest times.

Phillip has the distinction of being the youngest athlete and the first swimmer to represent the Virgin Islands at the Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, the Virgin Islands most decorated sprinter of all time, Tahesia G. Harrigan-Scott, gets into action in the 100m heats at 9:51 P.M. She competes in Lane 3 of Heat 3.
