ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Players from the Virgin Islands travelled to Orlando, Florida, last weekend, May 27-30, 2016, with the MyIsland Ballers to compete in the AAU Memorial Day Classic girls and boys basketball tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

More than 400 teams and more than 4,000 athletes participated in this 3 day event.

The Under 16 team, including the likes of Rakeel Jack, Dante Scatliffe, Kiandre Clarke, Renrick Massac Junior, Malachy S. Payne, K’Moi Walters, Sajwan France, Michael Richardson, and Ajai Frett, found little success on the court, but according to the coaching and management staff, including Derwyn Scatliffe, the players learnt a lot from the overall experience and came away with some positives to build upon.

Flawless record for U-19s

The Under 19 team then went better than the previous trip to the US as this time they struck Gold with a perfect 5 nil record.

Game one was a 59-48 win over First Coast Elite, then came an 83-66 blowout of Atlanta Aztecs Harris.

Game three was their closest contest, narrowly won in overtime 79-78 against k- elite.

That was followed by a rout of Lake Worth pride 64-32 in the final and the championship was secured with a thrashing of k- elite 85-69.

The team included D’moi M. Hodge, Tahj Malone, Romain Minott, Demoi Dagou, Gianni Maduro, Trent Herbert, Jomoi Dagou, and Jasin Rhymer.

The AAU Classic win for MyIsland Ballers, according to the Coaching Staff, came about due to having a balanced attack, a sense of urgency and determination that created electric passages of play.

Beyond those material gains basketball teaches life in general. Everything wrong with the BVI is experienced on the basketball court. Learning sports teaches life skills. But the coaching & administration needs to be better. There's too much hating on more skillful players, players with overseas experience, too much nepotism, and personal agendas. Many kids never get to participate in the BVI and don't discover how good they are until they leave and a real coach discovers them. This is constructive criticism so take it as such.
