SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – With the memories of the Boxing Day Races on December 27, 2015 still fresh in the minds of horse racing fans, the first meet for the New Year will be on Sunday January 17, 2016 when a number of horses from the Greater Virgin Islands will take centre stage at Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay for the VI Classic.

The feature race will see a clash of two of the best horses in the Greater Virgin Islands- My Pal Shawn of Tortola and St Moose of St Croix, US Virgin Islands.

And this time around it has been assured that there will be a veterinarian on standby at the track for the duration of the event. In addition, there will be an ambulance and a backhoe on standby.

Speaking with this news site yesterday January 7, 2016, President of the Virgin Islands Horse Owners’ Association Patsy C. Lake confirmed that a veterinary doctor will be there.

“There have been arrangements made for a vet and a backhoe to be on the track,” she said. “And also an ambulance,” she added.

It was a tragic day last race day at Ellis Thomas Downs when champion horse Doughmaker, owned by L&B Racing Stables, fell and broke both front legs and as a result had to be euthanised. However, co-owner Violet ‘Letty’ Delville-Hodge alleged that her horse had to suffer for about an hour before a veterinarian was available to tend to it and administer the lethal injection to put it to sleep.

So is the track a problem or not....? I don't understand.... If the track surface is a problem, why would races be going on as scheduled despite what happened the last 2 times..... I guess it's not a problem after all, or the owners are willing to take the risk....? I'm confused...... You gotta love this place boy....

St. Moose walk away with the two largest purses in 2015 and he will walk away with this one as well as he has no competition. My Pal Shawn barely get out of the way of Bitter Sweet so how he expect to win St. Moose. He better go shop.
