EAST END, Tortola, VI – Residents of the Virgin Islands (VI), particularly those in the East End Community, on Sunday, August 20, 2023, came together for a march to end violence in the VI. It was dubbed ‘Stop the Violence March'.

Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), speaking at the event, told residents that one way they can stop the violence in the VI is for the people of the community to take the initiative.

“We have a great battle on our hands in this community and in the entire Virgin Islands.”

Premier Wheatley added, “We cannot give up hope, we cannot allow despair to overtake us, but we face a very significant challenge, and it is literally a battle between good and evil. It is a battle between love and hatred. It is a battle between peace and violence,” he said.

'We have to examine our society'- Premier

The Premier continued that each individual in the VI community has to take responsibility and accountability for winning the battle. He reminded that communities in the VI were places of peace where persons were able to sleep with doors unlocked.

He also warned that there are murderers 'literally' walking around in VI communities and possibly interacting with unsuspecting persons.

“We have to look and examine our society and [ask] how did we get to a place of peace and love and harmony in our communities to where we are today,” he said.

Dr Wheatley said the VI has lost compassion and spoke about the need to protect children and those who are weakest in the VI community.

I agree with this and like it. We need to also march against colonialism and the high handedness of the UK and Governor using modern day slavery tactics to try to enslave the people of the BVI and all Caribbean Overseas Territory.

Good points. The BVI must fight against crime but at the same time the BVI do not make the drugs nor the guns. Check the UK news and it will shock all how out of control gun crimes and drugs are in a few places in the UK along with other crimes. However, the UK Officials in BVI make it seem as if only in BVI these kind of crimes occur. The Uk officials are about brainwashing and not real solutions.

These kind of movements are necessary and must be applauded. We need more of them including an urgent one against slavery of all forms.

Marching can’t stop nobody from taking up a gun and using it. We need to set in place programs to help mold our youth. We also firstly need to deal with our boarder and ports of entry

Positive move by organizers. People...To the young people, try not to act before you think. Please calculate the future cost of your actions, decisions and choices. The consequence is usually early death or long jail sentence. Take heed please.

Wise advice. Being caged as an animal is no life for people. Young men, women, etc need to be out a cage doing things and contributing to national productivity. Being caged takes from society , ie, housing, food, medical , etc, not contributing to society and national productivity and output. A cage life is an inconsequential at best and worst invisible life. However, you have a choice to live a free, well relatively free life, be caged as a field animal or take ip up premature residence in the graveyard. Do the right thing and be free.

Simple question(s). How many unsolved murders does the BVI have? Who has info on these cases which can help solve the case(s)? Are these murders tied to the underground economy—drugs? Why are people scared to come forward??Is there a racketeering cartel in the BVI which has been successful in intimidating, terrorizing people? Do people have a choice a)snitching or b)??? Was murder once a rarity in the BVI? Now , has the BVI become sensitize to murders? What change? Was the BVI socioeconomic change a factor? Does the sanctity of life less little value now? What can be done to turn things around? Are the politicians the answer? Are tough policies/administrative actions; ie, lock them up, throw away the key, etc, the panacea, the answer? Are strict, air tight controls the answer? Are symbolic actions the answer? Is strong leadership the answer? Is strong leadership in the the BVI an oxymoron? Has the BVI socioeconomic improvement proven to be a nightmare? Has the the shattering of cultural norms on the altar of the BIGS the cause of BVI problem? Is the BVI stratification into basically well-to-do and poor the cause? Is people power, people engagement , group power the answer? Plato, Aristotle, I’m stomp , what is your take?

Socrates, you and dem questions. I’m stomped too. The bigs, bigs, bigs,,importing and adopting of culture of big metropolitan countries. Everything from big countries are good for you. You got to tailor those things to suit local needs. Let’s see what Aristotle say when he woke up. Out..

Murder was relatively a foreign occurrence in the BVI back in the day. Today though, it is common place and seems relatively acceptable, it seems? It is an enigma, a curiosity, that is having the community scared as hell, changing lives. What happened? Was it drugs?

We know that drugs and guns go together like bread and butter, brick and mortar. There you go.

You cannot fight crime with t shirts and signs and speeches. Put up CCTV cameras, increase police presence, Issue rewards for information leading to the arrests because giving information in the BVI is a risk so there needs to be a reward. create opportunities and do things to better the economy so that less people feel like they need to turn to crime to survive in the first place.

This is all for show. Andrew spoke out against gun violence while being in bed with the perpetrators. If our government was serious, we would see more stringent measures being taken with border protection. Customs would also have to step up their game when it comes to checking containers as well. There is too much slackness in the way things are done. It’s too easy to import contraband into the VI. Nothing will change until the powers that be stop putting in a show and begin to value the lives that are being lost by these demonic practices.

Commendable but have we considered what would happen if a wild animal such as a tiger or bear escaped and was walking around killing people? The community would fight back some would run others will be throwing rocks and who ever has legal fire arms will be reaching for them without hesitation.

When those masked scooter riders or driver by shooters enter our communities... in my mind they are wild animals. They would not be doing this is they knew it would be a suicide mission where the community ends up lynching them.

    period.
