Murder accused Jessroy McKelly’s trial likely for March 21 start
Tomorrow March 21, 2014 has been set as the new date as all jury were summoned to return for a new set of jury members to be select. This was after a male juror, after being impaneled, learnt that he had some affiliated conditions which put him in a compromising position.
He told the court that because of the new development he no longer wished to continue to sit as a juror in the trial. The position having been explained to the court found favour with McKelly’s lawyer Ms Akilah Anderson and the prosecutor Mr Valston Graham. The Crown was also represented by Ms Leslie Ann Faulkner.
Prior to this matter being dealt with in open court three jurors were required to stand before Justice Nicola Byer to answer charges for being absent from court.
The Three Alcindor Baa, Stacy Vanterpool and Thanisha Turnbull were fined a total of $850. Baa who was absent on three occasions was fined $500, Vanterpool $250 and Turnbull $100.
The three were told by the judge that their absence had compromised the pool of jurors from which a selection for McKelly’s trial had to be made.
They saw the more serious side of the judge who was somewhat lenient but was very stern in her caution to them. They were warned to ensure their presence tomorrow morning in court for 9:00am and if challenges developed they should follow the stipulated procedures as set out in law.
