ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Knowing that she had a lot riding on her shoulders, the reigning Ms. BVI Abigail Hyndman proved that determination, beauty and intelligence are crucial and made the Territory proud by being the first queen to secure the 1st runner up spot at the annual Miss Caribbean World pageant, which was held on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the Multipurpose Sports Complex.

The beaming Hyndman in an interview with this news agency moments after her accomplishment, revealed that the day she won the Ms. BVI crown in August 2011, preparations began in earnest for the prestigious Caribbean pageant.

“And the hard work paid off! I am just happy to make the BVI proud...and this is just a stepping stone. I have several other pageants I am participating in. I can only get better from here,” she declared.

Commenting on her stellar performance throughout the highly competitive pageant, the confident young lady responded, “It’s been a while since we secured a spot in the top five much less win so I was going in full force and I am proud to be the first runner up.”

Apart from that, Hyndman won Ms. Intellect and Best Evening Wear awards.

The aspiring Anaesthesiologist also congratulated the winner Nadira Lando, Ms. Dominica, and the 14 other contestants that represented the “best of the best” from the Caribbean, and with a smile gushed, “First runner up is not a bad thing in my opinion.”

She added, “I must thank the BVI [people] that rallied behind me, and the love they showed me. Other persons from the Caribbean islands came out in their numbers and it just shows we are a unified Caribbean and that we are one people.”

Next stop for Ms. BVI is Miss. Carival in St. Vincent & the Grenadines, then the Miss. Jaycees Caribbean Queen Pageant followed by Miss Universe in December.

Hyndman, who took a year off her studies to perform her duties, is an advocate against domestic violence. She has collaborated with the Family Support Network to tackle the issue, and has called for the construction of a domestic violence shelter.

She is also a member of the Caribbean Student Association at Xavier University, a member of the Howard Hughes Biomedical Honor Corp at Xavier University of Louisiana, a volunteer of the Smile Beautification effort in the City of New Orleans, and a member of the National Honor Society- Amalian Chapter.

Long ago, a high "yaller"-a fake BVIslander- who them force to win the Ms. BVI crown couldn't even bring home a lick of another crown from any other pageant! Now today, a real BVIslander is bringing home all sorts of crowns. Congrats, to you my dear Abby! Continue to make our country proud to have you represent us as Ms. British Virgin Islands!

Lady you must feel proud, you came close to winning the title and that is more than a proud accomplisment - (1st Runner Up). I really can't remember any other Miss BVI who have come that close. Good job!

Congratulations Miss BVI. I thought MIss Dominica and MIss BVI were close but I believe that Miss BVI out modeled Miss Dominica in every segment. The auditorium was filled with Dominicans. Do you all know that the contestants receive points for "impact on the crowd". I think the judges gave Miss Dominica the edge because of the cheers from her countrymen. Do you all think that if the show was in Dominica that Miss BVI would have gotten the edge over their queen? I don't think so. We let our queen down by not being their to cheer her on. We could have won this hands down BVI. We have a capable queen and not enough support!!
