LONG BUSH, Tortola, VI- The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) has said the company to date has been able to recover most of the systems compromised during the August 15, 2024, ransomware attack.

In a public notice on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, BVIEC said the recovery was possible through the restoration and operation of the support systems remaining.

Online payment system not restored

While most of the electricity company’s systems have been restored, the same cannot be said for the online payment portal.

“As BVIEC's online bill payment is accessible and exposed via the internet, this system must be protected to reduce the risk of any further cyber-attacks,” the notice said.

BVIEC reiterated that it is aware of the convenience of the online payment system and assured its customers that they are working diligently to ensure the protection of their systems and customer information by extension.

No signs of online service breach- Forensic Experts

BVIEC also assured customers that the forensic experts have determined there is no “clear sign of a breach of the online service”.

General Manager of BVIEC Dr. Neil M. Smith said on August 21, 2024, that a criminal investigation was launched following the attack and that it was being treated as a national security issue.

However, customers are still being encouraged to remain vigilant and monitor their credit card charges.

The company added that “in the near future” the online service will be restored but only upon its satisfaction that the online service is “absolutely protected” against future breach attempts.

“Essentially, we are coming back better than before,” it said.

Promise to keep customers informed

The BVIEC has come under serious criticism from customers who feel that information regarding the cyber-attack was not forthcoming or given frequently enough.

The ransomware attack took place on August 15; however, the public was not notified until a press release was sent out on August 19, 2024.

Despite this, BVIEC thanked its customers for their patience and understanding.

The notice added, BVIEC will keep customers “informed and updated” on progress as the company strives to return to normal operations.

BVIEC should provide more facilities to its clients, a schedule during the week for cash payment and a staff that can work in the afternoons and on weekends, with payment by check and cards, with that they recover the cash faster and save time for the client.

I don't really believe them, never believed them...something happened but its not what they are selling us. The truth is missing....According to Bob Marley. " Keep the people hungry and you can control them with promises and lies" Hungry meaning needing something badly like ELECTRICITY.

Aya try hurry up I can't deal with those rude customers that cut line and make a fuss when they're called out. Then even worst the customer agents deal with them as if they didn't cut Infront of 20 people.

Those lines almost bad as bank lines. First bank don't even need a line they'll pretend your not there until they feed them rdy to call you. Thank god for the younger enthusiast workers who will come to your rescue. Don't let the job system discourage you youths and don't follow the bad customer service crowd

I wish we can still view the bill though even though we cannot pay it online, instead of having to go in to the office for a print out then to the cashier. If we have the bill online or through emails we can easily ask someone to go straight to the cashier and paid for us.

Your ideas are great but these people don't care about us. I emailed customer service about the amount of my current bill as i wanted to have someone make the payment for me. However, all i received was an automated response providing a ticket number. Up to this point, there haven't been a follow up email with a copy of thr bill attached or at least an email stating the amount. I can't fathom what will happen to those of us who are currently abroad on vacation or medical leave, etc. These people aren't catering to the different needs or requirements of their customers. The folks at BVIEC aren't thinking outside the box. Hopefully, the team will read the blogs and recognise there's a need to make some necessary changes, fast. We, the customers are fed up wasting time in such unnecessary long lines. Time is money. Lets hope they don't plan to disconnect their customers due to their (BVIEC) stupidity.

At least get someone to answer emails, we can provide account number and they can send the bill though email. The present process may not be long for them but imagine you have to joined one line to get the bill then another line to pay. Whereas if we already get the bill we go straight to the cashier as I mentioned in my previous post. This is feasible especially if you asking someone a favor to go in and pay your bill.

In this current situation BVIEC should be adding locations to pay bills. You shouldn't have to drive from the East or West ends to town then wait hours just to pay your electric bill. At least add more employees and organize the line, you gonna have riots down there soon
