Most patients hospitalised with COVID-19 have chronic diseases– Dr Georges
Speaking during a COVID-19 webcast on July 16, 2021, he said the Virgin Islands is no different from India, China and other countries like Italy, the US and the UK regarding its COVID infections.
Global trends playing out in VI - Dr Georges
Dr Georges said even though a large proportion of persons will have no symptoms or mild symptoms and then recover, others will suffer a more severe case of the virus.
He further went on to say that regarding risk factors for mortality rates surrounding the virus, the international evidence is being played out in the VI.
“Most of our cases are obese, some morbidly obese meaning very obese. Most of them have chronic diseases, most of them are diabetic, most of them are hypertensive, a few of them have chronic lung conditions,” he said.
Dr Georges indicated that based on this international evidence, people with the factors listed are at high risk for mortality as is the current case in the territory.
Self-care unless symptoms are severe
“What can we do at this stage? So we have 1,596 presently who are infected as active cases and you know some of them may begin to exhibit symptoms, some of them may require to be hospitalised,” he said.
Dr Georges said before the severe stage, persons who are experiencing symptoms of the virus, are being encouraged to stay at home and practice self-care.
“Once you get to a certain stage, we would really like you to call the health services for assistance. You can call the hotline at 852-7650,” he said.
“If you're having severe distress, it is important for you to call 911 and activate that system,” he detailed.
Vaccination has been effective - Dr Georges
The Acting Chief Medical Officer further reminded that the evidence worldwide for the last six months has shown that over 99.5% of all deaths worldwide have been in unvaccinated persons.
”So despite everything that we've been hearing, vaccination does prevent hospitalisation, severe COVID, ICU and death in a large proportion of persons,” he said.
There have been 14-COVID-19 related deaths in the Virgin Islands as of July 17, 2021.

But it takes the body about two weeks to create the corona antibodies after the vaccination.
So when Covid attacks the unvaccinated person, it takes the body the same or a similar time , several days or even weeks , to create the antibodies. Meanwhile Covid is multiplying and by the time the unaided immune system can produce enough antibodies to kill it it may be too late.
People must be vigilant and continue wearing good quality masks and wear them so that they cover their nose and mouth, and continue to observe physical distancing in public. Give the vaccine enough time for it’s full effect! Protect yourself in the meantime! Delta is vicious!
Get vaccinated. Be safe.
To put what he said in a nutshell: Covid is aids for over-weight peoples. Don't matter what color or creed you are. Give it a chance, it will bury you... by next week possibly... get vaxxed and stay strong!
My bad. I thought it was a random name used by a certain group.
Won't use your name again... sounds like I just took those pages out of someone else book.
What I will do, is call your opinions out! for some reason you think you are the voice of reason...!
If you add it all up you can work out who I am. Like I could work out who you are but lets not bother with that... I will print my own name because I ain't scared of the kicking your mouth piece could dish out. Lets make it fun... lets just fight and the winner takes the name? wanker!
Got a better plan: lets all put our names where our mouths our!
Don't poke something you are scared to feed.
I admit to being a wanker. Who isn’t?
But posting under an alias keeps the focus on the message and not the messenger( and whatever baggage people think he or she is carrying.)
I agree with you, a balanced article. I appreciate Dr Georges for his courage to come forward with words that are based on facts and not stirring the fear. The virus is the last drop for those vulnerable ppl, the straw that breaks the camel's back. We need to take responsibility as individuals for creating much of those vulnerabilities. When you are 30 y.o and super overweight and with type 2 diabetes, you need to take responsibility for potential health consequences later down the road. Don't just blame covid ,or non-vaxxers or govt etc. Vaccine can be part of the solution, especially for some people who are really vulnerable and don't have enough time right now to correct aspects of their health that render them vulnerable to this virus. But is far from being the magic bullet. Look at UK right now, with a high vaccination rate, look at Israel right now, with a huge vaccination rate.
In parallel with vaccination, encourage and let ppl work on those vulnerabilities. Let the gyms operate. Nowhere in the whole world, these past 16 months was any covid outbreak originated in a gym. Exercising makes you stronger. All those risk factors are getting reduced through exercise as a main tool of a better lifestyle.

I choose to be vaccinated. What is your choice? You decide.
Amazing how the topic is shifting from the unvaccinated to underlying conditions. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that vaccinated persons lost their lives too?
So basically at the end of the day as most of us knew your best chance at survival is choosing a healthy lifestyle. Lot of these chronic conditions can be avoided or managed by focusing on our diet, regular exercise especially cardio, adequate rest, stress management, sunshine, drinking lots of water daily, proper ventilation, vitamin supplements. This goes for vaccinated or unvaccinated as both can die from this.
we have not built back into our culture the conversation of a death as being in anyway good or comforting those who are terminally ill. Everyone dies and it’s taboo to talk about it beforehand. we focus on objects that can be bought & sold which the bible & all the religions advise against.
The wealthy man wanted to follow Jesus and was told to give his wealth to the poor which he chose not to.
The bible has many lessons. Unless people learn to let go of the objects in this life they can never pass on in peace. Even more difficult is letting go of your loved ones spouse child and parent. It’s written there is no discharge in that war. We will have to accept it.
If the pandemic ended now this topic remains relevant from the moment of birth we are destined to die. We need good preaching always.
Jesus said and which of you by being anxious can add time on to your lifespan?
Peace is heaven on earth. Today’s society makes achieving the Lord’s Prayer daily a tremendous task.
As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil thy rod and thy staff comforts me. That valley isn’t a good place but God is always with us.
Tortola is different by many ways than India, Japan and China. Its a small speck of an island with small population the similarities is that it shared the spread of COVID like those countries. There are some experts typing things they heard and believe and now repeat, get the facts. It would have been best for those who has underlying condition not to take the vaccine but try to correct those condition, stay away from the mass population, check with your doctor for improvement then take the vaccine if its your choice. But it is sad to you hear young men and women are dying, and I feel they could be saved by all means. Take your exercising , if its for just ten minutes per day, eat those fruits and vegetables.
The people need to ask the government to have NHI cover 10% of the fruits and vegetables , its part of healthy living, and to role out free medicine for those who are diabetics, and people with high blood pressure. People need to go back to basis, and eliminate those mucus forming food.
