Moss inspired win cements Wolues top four finish!
Although there is room for some final position changes between the Wolues, who currently sit 4th and the Sugar Boys in 3rd, the draw was made for the Heineken Cup semi finals Thursday at the BVIFA offices by Andi Dobie of Road Town Wholesale and Jim Polimo, a visiting Coach from Philadelphia.
The Draw paired up the Islanders, who finished top of the National League with the 3rd place team and One Love who finished 2nd with the 4th placed team, which means that currently Sugar Boys who are 2 points ahead of the Wolues with a game to play would face the Islanders, leaving One Love to play the Wolues in the semifinals on May 13.
The final is scheduled for May 19 to coincide with the Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Chelsea, which will be shown on JTV courtesy of the BVIFA.
The prize money at stake for the winners is $1,000.
The timing of the draw leaves the Wolues the option of “choosing”, who they play. If they decide One Love would be an easier option, then they don’t have to win their last game and could settle for a draw or even defeat.
Either way the Wolues earned their spot with another fine win over the Lucian’s with a two goal salvo from Matthew Moss, a debut goal from Rory Thornton, a glorious lobbed effort from Tony Spencer to open the scoring and an opportunist poach from Tom Bridgwater to round the night off.
For the opener on 4 minutes, Bridgewater directed a flicked header straight into the path of Spencer who held off the defenders challenge before making some room and lobbing the advancing Benjamin Camille into the back of the net.
The second came after a spell of pressure from the Stars who were being inspired up front by the running of Jevon Wallace. Unfortunately that spell was brought to an end in the 40th minute, with his sending off for violent conduct after an exchange of words and some "argy bargy".
Straight from the resulting free kick and before the player had left ground as is customary Moss made it two nil latching onto the long ball and crashing the ball past Camille.
A lengthy spell of remonstration by the Stars followed but the goal stood.
Bradley Henry pulled a goal back immediately after the break as the Stars began putting together some flowing football. One such move swept the ball the length of the pitch as Cyprian Antoine found Brad Remy. Remy dodged two challenges and laid a perfect ball through to Henry, whose shot brought the best out of new Wolues Keeper, Rob Hunt.
Moss though was everywhere urging his team to remain composed and it was fitting that he scored the Wolues third, following a sublime pass from Bridgewater that he then fired home past Camille from 12 yards out.
“It was tough battle; we should have scored a lot more goals, but pleased to have got on the score sheet. I'm a little disappointed in the two goals we let in, but otherwise we got the right result.”
The Stars were given a glimmer of hope when Hunt was somehow adjudged to have impeded a Stars player as they both went for a loose ball in the box.
Henry easily scored his second, but as the Stars pushed forward in the vain hope of saving their season and reaching the final four, the Wolues pounce twice more though, first through Rory Thornton scoring his first goal for the team in the 77th minute.
“It was a good goal, pretty simple, but it worked out!”
