ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – With strong winds and heavy rains sweeping the A.O. Shirley Grounds on Wednesday January 18, 2012, making the game a virtual lottery, the Sugar Boys and the Ballstars played out a thoroughly entertaining match which the Sugar Boys won 3-2 to gain valuable ground on the table topping Islanders.

The first storms had hit earlier in the afternoon and the officials, having had a lengthy debate, finally decided the game should go ahead. Of course following the delay albeit with a lull in the weather conditions and the start of the game, the rains returned in full force, but both sides committed them to a full bloodied match up.

After a spell of domination from the Sugar Boys, which should have seen them at least two up, the Ballstars drew first “blood”.

A clearance from inside their own penalty area found its way to Jamie Brown, who with speed and skill bore down on goal, evaded two tackles and gave Maxford Pipe in the Boys’ goal no chance with a deadly finish.

Terry Baptiste and Jario Morris both had clear cut chances for the Boys before the opening goal and both were to atone for earlier misses later in the game.

It was Baptiste who fired home the equalizer on 38th and then came the games most controversial moment as Carlos Septus appeared to be brought down unfairly in the box by Aceon Stidane. However, much to the amazement of the Ballstars, the referee ignored the shouts for a penalty and waived play on. Ballstars Coach Vincent “Nabo” Samuel was not a happy man with the decision or indeed other infringements that went against his team during the game.

“We were frustrated by the officials, it was horrible, they allowed the game to get out of control and weren’t playing fair.”

Shortly after Jamie McCoy found himself one on one with Pipe, but with the keeper standing tall, McCoy hit his shot straight at the keeper and saw his shot deflected away from goal.

With the second half underway and no respite from the rain, the game opened up into an end to end game with both teams throwing caution to the wind.

Ballstars’ Chris Barbour put his team back in front on 51 minutes, beating the diving Pipe inside his right post. However, the Sugar Boys began to slowly assert themselves and with Coach Jeffrey Demming urging them forward, they equalized inside two minutes

“I told my guys to stop playing so wide and deep and to close down the midfield.”

It was a long range contender for goal of the season from Derrol Redhead that restored parity.

“Did you see that goal?" exclaimed Demming. “I shouted at him to fire, the ball was slippery and he sent it to goal!”

The game continued to ebb and flow with chances at both ends, but when it mattered most Morris was on hand to score the winner on 67 minutes after a deflected shot had hit the bar and bounced into his path.

“As I saw the ball coming I just swung my left foot and scored in the right hand corner,” he calmly explained.

Both coaches were positive about the game, understanding it had become a lottery.

As Demming explained, “It was a fairly good game but the conditions were so wet and slippery. Overall we played well despite not having much practice over Christmas. We played better in the second half especially.”

“Nabo” put a positive spin on the result. “We basically strayed a bit from the game plan he said “we had some inexperienced players but held our own. Some of our under 17’s got playing time, but the inexperience cost us the game.”

With the win the Sugar Boys maintanied pressure on the Islanders with just two points separating them in first and second place in the table.

Others results meant the Wolues moved into 3rd place following their win over VG United who slip to 5th. The Panthers sneak into 4th on goal difference with their 11-1 thrashing of the Haitian Stars who remain firmly rooted to the bottom of the standings without a win this season.
