DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- The little ones kicked, blocked, punched, rolled and returned to their fight stance as the large crowd of supportive parents cheered on at the grading exercise of the Purple Dragon martial arts school yesterday, December 4, 2013 at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duffs Bottom.
The exercise was conducted under the watchful eyes of Professor Don Jacob of Trinidad, along with a number of assistants that included instructor of the school, Senpai Bevon Baptiste.
A number of students were elevated to yellow and orange belts following their routines of the Don Jitsu Ryu style of martial arts, which was actually started by Professor Jacob.
According to Senpai Baptise, the grading exercise had to be moved to the Save the Seed Energy Centre due to the large number of students, which he said numbered more than a hundred and would be graded over two days, concluding today, December 5, 2013.
“I think the students did very well. We had one hundred per cent of victory today and from the good discipline that I saw today, I am hoping that the work that the instructors are doing to develop good character in young people would flourish and blossom so that the next batch of students coming out of this country is going to be really something to look forward to,” Professor Jacob told Virgin Islands News Online.
The professor was pleased with the performances at the grading exercise but was not surprised. “From this little island, we have always been getting champions for years, people coming from this dojo. Guys from here have fought in Australia, England, all over the United States and Canada. So in 2015 we are going to have the World Championship in Trinidad and celebration of 45 years so I am hoping we are going to get a lot of gold medals coming back to this little island.”
The veteran martial artist also disclosed that next year a team will be going to Japan and will be taking along some students from the Virgin Islands.
Professor Jacob encouraged parents to send their children to the martial arts school and assured that they had nothing to fear. “I don’t think parents should be sceptical. Martial Arts is one of the disciplines where you have the least amount of injuries than any other sport, it’s amazing.”
The Purple Dragon martial arts school entered the Virgin Islands some twenty-two years ago and was brought to the Territory by Sensei Albert Andrews who is now a Shihan (Master of martial arts) in Florida.
Located in Road Town on upper Main Street above the Faith Baptist Church, the school teaches self-defence techniques, break-falls, sparring, weapons training as well as mental and physical fitness.
The style is essentially a hybrid of several other styles of martial arts including Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido, weaponry, kick boxing and yoga.
Persons need only be able to move and be aged 4-years and above in order to participate in sessions at the Purple Dragon dojo in Road Town. Interested first timers are eligible to participate in a free trial class where an evaluation can be done by Mr Baptiste, who sports a third degree black belt in Don Jitsu Ryu.
