ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Three predatory strikes by Henroy Mitchell ensured all 3 points for the Islanders in their 5 – 0 drubbing of the Panthers in the Terry Evans League on Sunday December 11, 2011 on the A.O. Shirley Ground.

The Islanders FC sent out a strong Christmas message to all their League rivals with a dominating display against the Panthers, a side who many thought would be able to give them a run for their money.

However, on the day the Islanders just had too much pace, too much movement and in Henroy Mitchell, a proven goal scorer who terrorized defenders from first minute to last.

Fitzroy Daley is also settling into his holding midfield role with determination and he was at the hub of the majority of the Islanders’ attacks.

Despite a well marshaled defense and a battling midfield, the Panthers are too light weight upfront, especially against the likes of Noel Isaacs, Andy Davis and Ranalie Cains.

Naldo Andersen has also found a scoring touch and along with the dual threat upfront of wingers Dwayne Ross and Francis Primo, no defender can afford to relax for a minute.

Yes, they are beatable as the Ballstars and a few, very few, others have proven, but it remains hard to see who will pip them to another Championship this term.

Sunday’s game against the Panthers should have been a stern test as the Panthers are well organized, relatively fit and definitely capable of taking points from the “Big Guns” in the league. However, after just 15 minutes of constant pressure they found themselves two goals down.

It was the man Mitchell who had a hand in both.

First he hit a sweetly taken free kick from 20 yards that was too hot for keeper, Erron Ewers to handle. Francis Primo reacted quickest to fire the loose ball into the net past the despairing dive of Ewers. Then 5 minutes later, Mitchell doubled the Islanders lead. He cut inside the defense, latched onto a through ball from Nano Ottley and had just too much pace and power, outmuscling Jerome Fridicks and outpacing the out rushing keeper to slide the ball home.

Mitchell then made it three nil, scoring his second with a powerful header on 28 minutes.

The one way traffic was halted briefly, as the first half came to a close by the Panthers when Mortimor Gordon began to find some space up front. Stenneth Williams also had a couple of half chances, but Montgomery Butler, in goal, has a safe pair of hands.

Junior Hegliger also caused a few problems down the right hand side, but more often than not, even if they make a mistake, the Islanders were very quick to recover and always seemed first to the second ball.

Ross and Ottley were replaced by Jamal Sargeant and Ray Phillip at the start of the second half without upsetting the Islanders flow and on 65 minutes, Mitchell completed his hat trick.

Again using his speed to burst through the last line of defense and making no mistake, rounding Ewers and curling the ball into the empty net.

The Panthers then took the attack to the Islanders in an attempt to get back into the game. Collin Mickle’s well struck free kick was hit straight at Butler who made no mistake. Butler also had to be alert to divert a dipping volley out for a corner at the near post as two Panthers players awaited a rebound.

Collin Ollivierre had a free kick blocked by the Islanders wall and Wendall Anthony got his head on the ball from a rare corner, but was unable to hit the target.

Odaine Johnson rounded off the scoring with a half volley in the 78th minute and yet again the Islanders were celebrating a high scoring victory.

“I’m feeling very proud,” stated Mitchell, “and very happy for my team. We came out and played well and got all 3 points. All 3 goals were down to my speed, as u can see I’m very fit now and train a lot, so I can get to the ball first.”
