ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Newly crowned Miss Plus World Sylvanna L. Charles returned to her homeland, Virgin Islands, early last night March 14, 2022, when she was greeted by a welcoming party that included Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7).

Charles, whose platform was ‘Child Literacy’, was crowned Miss Plus World on March 12, 2022, in Texas, USA.

The Virgin Islander was also awarded the top prizes for Cover Girl and National Costume.

‘Amazing’ experience

Speaking about her experience at the pageant, Charles said she was able to meet some of the contestants from around the world and intends to maintain contact with them “and hopefully plan some big things together as the Miss Plus World 2022.”

Charles also shared that the experience was not without some challenges.

“It was amazing, it was a lot of work non-stop with the scheduling but we had a few hiccups here and there in terms of my preparation but I tried my best to remain focus and do what I had to do when I got on the stage and delivered a great performance,” she reflected.

The experienced pageant contestant was asked if she intends to go after another crown in the not-so-distant future.

“Not right now, I don’t want to say never, never say never, but I might need a little break,” Charles responded.

Charles’ achievement comes as no surprise- Dr Wheatley

Meanwhile, Dr Wheatley said Charles’ accomplishment on the international scene was no surprise.

“This is an awesome accomplishment of course. We saw Sylvanna perform on the stage here from the time she was very, very young winning titles and wowing individuals and we always knew that she could do it on the world stage. She proved it. She went out there and represented what BVI can do to the world and I am so incredibly proud of her.”

Also giving brief remarks was one of Charles’ aunts, Principal of the Enis Adams Pre-Primary School Mrs Valarie Welch-Charles.

“Today, Sylvanna we would like to say that we are proud of you. You have our blood and you are a true Charles. You are bold, you are warmly aggressive and you stop beyond nothing.”

Successful & experienced pageant contestant

Last year Charles was crowned 2nd runner up in the Miss BVI pageant.

Among the pageant crowns won over the years by Charles are Miss BVI Princess 2005, Miss Teen BVI 2010; Miss Caribbean Talented Teen AXA 2011, 2013 VG Easter Festival Queen and 2017 Miss VG Bold & Beautiful.

Charles had placed Second Runner Up at the Miss Plus Size Universe International Pageant in St Vincent and the Grenadines in April 2019.

She is now the 2nd Virgin Islands' woman to bring home an international pageant crown.

Sophia M. Rubaine won Mrs Curve Globe in June 2021 when the Virgin Islands participated in that category of the pageant for the first time.

She reminds me about those lol kids that are trained to be in pageants from the age of four with their moms always behind of them pressuring them.

LOL! It's amazing how a WHOLE narrative can be made up based off of one picture! You have NO idea the amount of STRESS my mother takes on to ensure I have everything I need on order to compete. She never asked for any of this but like any parent she's happy WHEN I AM HAPPY!
She knew NOTHING about pageantry (nor is it her "thing") but she made an effort to educate herself on the ins and outs of the business! It's NO different than an athletes parents pouring time and money into their child! Let's not even talk about their grueling schedules....
When I decide to quit, so will she, until then she will FOREVER be at my side SUPPORTING me because THAT'S WHAT MOTHER'S DO!

Miss, I dont know you personally, but congrats on your win. And believe me, many children do not have a supportive mother or they don't have a mother at all, so you are very fortunate to have a mother. Round of applause for your mom cause a Mother's love can never be replaced.

I’m not usually one to embrace this sort of thing and often make jokes about it but having read this I feel ashamed for being like that and understand how if you love someone you put them first no matter what.

Ok so what you're NOT going to do is talk/type foolishness!

First off, it's funny how someone can make up an ENTIRE narrative based off of ONE picture.

Secondly, you have NO IDEA the amount of stress my mother has endured to ensure that I am ALWAYS ready to compete (trust me we have STORIES to tell). She never asked for any of this! She knew NOTHING about pageantry when I started; but like any CARING parent, she has SACRIFICED so that I can SUCCEED!
It is no different to parents who have children involved in sports, entertainment etc. They too are forced to make sacrifices (sometimes life altering). At the end of the day once her children & grandchild are happy, she's happy!

Lastly, it's NEVER any PRESSURE when we're WINNING! ;)

Big up to you Sylvanna, you have done what very few people has done for their country and self. Winning any international competition is sure not easy. And official motorcade needs to be organize as soon as possible because I saw motorcade for fourth place including breaking curfew. Celebrate your winnings and continue to be a shining star so the young yones can see and believe in their self's.
