- Promised coronation event cancelled
Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture, Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4) said while the coronation of Miss BVI 2025 at the opening ceremony of the 71st Emancipation Festival is unconventional, it will be done with honour and respect. Photo: Facebook

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - While it was already announced that there would be no Miss BVI 2025 Pageant, the public was reassured that they could still attend a royal celebration with the coronation of last year’s first runner-up, Miss Donyelle D. Hodge, as Miss BVI; however, that too has been changed.

Back in June 2025, Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture, Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4) said the cancellation of the pageant for the 71st Emancipation Festival was “way, way, way beyond” their control.

She explained then that, “It was simply impossible to have a pageant with two contestants. I must say the committee made special efforts to encourage other contestants to stay on board…and to even to solicit for other young ladies to come out and vie for the title, but unfortunately, time was of the essence.”

Unconventional coronation @ Festival opening ceremony

Speaking on The Virgin Islands Voice last night, Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the Junior Minister once again apologised to the public, especially those who look forward to the annual queen show for its cancellation.

While a coronation experience where patrons of the show would have had the opportunity to attend dressed elegantly, Hon Hodge-Smith said, “that too is not to be in the way that we initially planned”.

Instead, the Junior Minister said Miss Hodge will be crowned in an “unconventional manner, yet in a way that demonstrates the respect and honour due to her”

The coronation will be done at the festival's opening ceremony at Charlie Neil Frett Festiville this Friday, July 25, 2025.

"It's not the usual way in which you would do that, but beyond our control, things didn't work out the way it should have been, so we [had to] find a different way to get it done."

Miss Hodge will be crowned Miss BVI 2025, and Hon Hodge-Smith added it will be done with "a twist" as they try to make it as "pleasant and honourable to her as Miss BVI 2025".

Why not let the reigning queen continue as all the other queens did. When something is earned it is most cherished/valued.

I remember when Miss BVI Queen show on August Sunday night was an honorable event that so.many use to look forward to. People wore gowns and formal wear and spent the day by Theo the hairdresser in Lower Estate and the other local salons in town. Those days it wasn't no tshirt crew to rep your contestant. Visitors use to look forward to this and afterwards there use to be a formal ball at venues such as Fort Burt hotel, Stone Haven, Beach Club, Springette by the Sea and we enjoy ourselves till its time to dress for rise and shine. Wherever the Eddie and the Movements (later Jam Band), Imaginations Brass, the band that Glen Harrigan and them boys had (can't remember the name) and other nice smooth bands use to play, the mature people use to find them.

I remember when even the current junior minister was a contestant who won. Miss Parsons made a few gowns for contestants as well back in the day.

The parade always had a not ontime curse on it that somehow can't get fix, but we accustom now. Remember Mr Elihu Rymer on his bike through the parade and Chairman, Erasmus Williams and Mr Merit Herbert of ZBVI covering. The WSTA people from St Thomas I believe use to come to do live coverage. The days when who is who had a camcorder and the up and coming cell phones didn't have cameras. Now today everybody could record.

Use to look forward also to seeing Mrs. Margaret Borde coming up in the parade with her costume. Mrs Corine Brewley and Mrs Jasmine Brewley use to have awesome troupes with people dressed properly. The majorettes were also a highlight.

I can't remember everything but some of you can add what you can remember.

    The good ole days

I don’t care who is vex or sucking their teeth. That is not cool. After making the decision to not have a 2025 queen show you have made a decision to crown a queen? How can you crown someone that did not put in any work or competed for the title. That does not make any type of sense.OHHHHHH, I see, it is a friend thing, who knows who. Then tonight you are going to see the wrong doing bunch cheering it on. The young lady is not qualified to be Ms BVI, she did not work for that title. I agree, go off to the Ms Universe pageant around qualified women and be the laughing stock. Those girls know competition and you’re not. Have to say, those girls from Jamaica, Guyana and Trinidad be well prepared and trained for the international stage.

The fact that we already have a qualified queen and crowning someone who definitely DOES NOT DESERVE THAT CROWN nor did she put in the work for it is crazy work. Ms. BVI should reign another year if that’s the case. This friend/family thing in the BVI must stop.

but she would never feel shame if she felt entitled to the crown. being a "daughter of the soil" will only get you so far girl.

This breathes corruption! These people has no character! Yet she get up infront of a mic looking innocent! These people don’t have the fear of God in their hearts when they carry out their WICKED plans! Hope the BVI gets better as a country. What can this lady tell people on the international stage how she got that crown. ‘It was given to me’. Laughable????????????????.
  • DonFool (25/07/2025, 09:31) Like (3) Dislike (0) Reply
This was the PLAN all along with the festival committee head! You had 4 ladies or less say 2 willing ladies that can carry on a show but NO, let’s give it to the 1st runner up from last year’s show because they felt she should have won! NEPOTISM at its best! You see why the BVI is labeled CORRUPT because of their own people. No class, no character at all. They should have encouraged the lady to run again if she so wanted a crown to feel important! This is laughable! This tells me how low and lack of self esteem these people have! We need to do better as a people and GROW up! Shameful!
