ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, under Minister Honourable Sharie B. de Castro (AL), has begun a series of focus-group sessions as part of its comprehensive review of the Virgin Islands K–12 curriculum, aimed at creating a more modern, relevant and robust learning experience for students.

The initiative was announced in a Facebook post by the Ministry, which said the sessions bring together key stakeholders from across the community. Participants include Ministry officials, teachers, students, parents, principals, representatives from the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), and local business leaders.

According to the Ministry, the focus groups aim to ensure diverse perspectives directly shape the future of education in the Virgin Islands. By listening to teachers, families, students, school leaders, tertiary institutions and the business community, the Ministry said it is working to ensure the curriculum prepares students for higher education, the evolving workforce and lifelong success.

Modernisation of education

The review is part of the Ministry’s broader effort to modernise education and align learning with the Virgin Islands' needs. The Government has previously stated that the last comprehensive curriculum review was conducted in 2007, and that the current process seeks to integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM), raise academic standards and reflect the values of the Virgin Islands.

The Ministry’s Facebook post described the consultations as “vital,” noting that the input gathered will help build an education system that is responsive to the realities of today’s learners and the demands of tomorrow’s economy.

The focus-group sessions are expected to continue as the Ministry advances its curriculum-review process.
