ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Minister for Overseas Territories Rt Hon Amanda A. Milling has arrived in the [British] Virgin Islands (VI) for a four-day visit between March 17 and March 20, 2022.

UK-VI relationship to be discussed

According to a press release from the Office of the Governor on March 17, 2022, the Minister will hold talks with Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) to discuss the UK-VI relationship, and the importance of standing together against Russia’s action in Ukraine to ensure that sanctions are imposed with full effect.

The Virgin Islands’ relationship with the UK was soured during the tenure of controversial ex-governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert who secretly worked with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to commission an inquiry into the Virgin Islands.

Mr Jaspert, who shared a strained relationships with the Premier and was accused of trying to bully the elected government and even the legislature announced the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) on Martin Luther King Day, mere days before he exited the VI in January 2021.

The UK has sponsored the CoI.

It is a privilege to be the Minister for Overseas Territories and I am proud of the support the UK gives, not least throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had such a huge impact on BVI communities.

“I am keen to learn more about BVI first-hand. I look forward to meeting the people of BVI, to listen, and to understand.”

Minister Milling, according to the Office of the Governor, will meet the Commissioner of Police and visit the Police Marine Unit to hear about their plans to improve maritime security. I also note VISAR always getting attention from the crown. I am very suspicious about that. Is there something about VISAR BVIslanders don't know? I see Gov't has been trying to take over some of the responsibilities of VISAR. I think it is a very wise move.

Whilst we have a few, Its virtually impossible to recruit non whites. Very few of them have the dedication and work ethic to be on call 24 hours a day. They are not fair weather sailors.

Surely it is a calling to be part of a service like VISAR. The few people I know who were very involved in VISAR in the past were extremely dedicated. Always had their pagers on them, when “on call”, ready to take the call whenever needed. I’ve seen many dinner guests have to leave in the midst of dinner. And to see them after a “shout” if someone had died, you could tell how invested they had been in the service of saving lives. And how hard it was when a life was lost.
I do not understand anyone being suspicious of VISAR. But, there is no place for derogatory comments, such as you made, about local people. Local people are dedicated and hard working. Your comments to the contrary sound Colonial and snobbish.

there must be a reason why the governor and others fighting the locals blacks to have a local VISAR set of crooks and always saying others corrupt
