ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – With two seconds remaining, a 3-point attempt by Braeden Chalwell was blocked by Dante Vanterpool and as the buzzer sounded, Althea Scatliffe Primary School erupted into celebration taking the 2011 BD Basketball Inter Primary Championship with a 28-25 victory over Cedar International School yesterday Saturday November 19, 2011.

Coach Travis Fonseca was understandably overjoyed and was full of praise for his team who “played with pride, passion and aggression to overcome a very good team.”

He was also full of praise for one of his star players, Kedrick Matthews, who recorded another "double double" in this year’s tournament. He finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists to lead his team to the win.

“I feel great, we came out to play hard, the coach really helped us and we played great as a team,” Matthews commented after the game.

Right from the start, ASPS led the game and a 5-4 first quarter lead became 13-8 at the end of the first half. That soon became 16-8 when Matthews made an interception and scored despite being fouled. He also made 1 of the 2 free throws.

Matthews scored again to make it 18 – 8, before Frankie Kalama got onto the score sheet for Cedar to pull it back to 18-11. Kalama was the hero of the wins in both the zone semi final and final for Cedar and went onto score 8 points, 4 rebounds, 6 steals and 1 assist.

An exchange of 2 pointers between Kai Turnbull and Jomoi Levons left the scores on 24 – 16 at the end of the 3rd quarter and as the 4th quarter started there was no indication of the drama and excitement that was to follow.

The first 3 minutes passed before the game burst into life in the final 3.

Jude Kinkead scored one of two free throws and when Dante Vanterpool was penalized for travelling, the Chalwell brothers made a great combination play to set up Kinkead under the basket for 2.

The score stood at 26-21 before Malik Jones relieved the relentless pressure from Cedar school with a 2- pointer to make it 28-21. Into the last minute, Matthews made another interception, finding Jones with a pass. He then passed to Renrick Massac Junior, but his attempted return pass went out of play to give Cedar back the ball.

On the offense, Kalama passed to Turnbull, but he “travelled”. Matthews then linked up with Vanterpool, the quick interchange of passes set up Matthews for the shot, but it was blocked. Kalama somehow got a pass away to Nick Chomiak who scored a 2 to make it 28-23.

Into the final 30 seconds, Turnbull on the attack was accidently tripped by Levons, Kalama picked up the loose ball and passed to Turnbull. His shot missed as Matthews picked up the rebound for Scatliffe. Kalama stole the ball back and as he fired off an unsuccessful shot which was fouled.

He scored both free throws to make it 28-25 and set up the final frantic seconds, but Matthews, with his last desperate defensive block and ASPS were not to be denied.

“I’m proud of my boys,” commented Cedar coach Tony Smithen. “It's our first year with a basketball programme so to finish second makes me very proud. We came out and played hard but ASPS are an excellent team, well coached and great passers.”

Dante Vanterpool finished with 6 points, 4 rebounds and 6 blocks for ASPS. Kai Turnbull had 7 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks and 7 steals for Cedar.
