ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– The Road Town Methodist Church has received criticisms online for the condition of its graveyard wall, which has been described as an eyesore in the heart of town.

Once social media user on December 19, 2022, brought the situation to the fore and blasted the church publicly for the condition of the wall.

“The Methodist should be ashamed of the condition of their graveyard wall in the middle of Road Town. It's a darn eyesore,” a Gui Hil stated on BVI National Forum.

The debate!

The post has since sparked conversation online, with one Facebook user suggesting that the persons on the post come together and buy some ready mix mortar bags and plaster up the wall for the church.

Another user; however, felt the church has enough money to be able to afford its graveyard wall repairs.

Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) attempted to get a comment from the church leaders, including Reverend Dr Keith B. Lewis, Superintendent of BVI Circuit; however, our attempts were futile.

Social media users, while willing to take on the project as a service to the church, remained split on whether the church can affect its own repairs or whether the community should pitch in.

The graveyard is reportedly the final resting place of approximately 3000 persons. One of the most prominent is Sir James Olva Georges, who had the first state funeral held on the island in his honour in 1976.

Agree, let the dead Rest In Peace. The dead resting place should be cleaned and maintained as well, don’t you agree? There is enough people on the Island and the church members that can volunteer and clean up the wall. But as usual on this piece of volcano rock that we are living on, everything turns into some type of confusion. No, I’m not getting paid so why should I care. It is her fault, it is his fault. Mommy said maybe their is some type of invisible order less gasses seeping from the volcano we are living on turning everyone half stupid and messed up in the head.

I guess the reverend revernt will now come out with a public statement in a while. You know our people don't like their feathers ruffled and quick to rebut. A relative is laid to rest there and I can attest that the church charge a good bit of money.

BVI on a whole is low on the maintenance of everything, so this is not anything new. Our standards all around are indeed low. ...next.....

Exactly, correct. Of course he is going to come out with a statement trying to ignore or put the blame on someone else. The famous words here is TIS YOUR FAULT. For sure, they go into hissy fit mode when the feathers get ruffled.

What about the rest of the island? The roads are diabolical, the bush overgrown, where are the complaints and media attention for those to name just a few?

I've heard that it takes at least a $million to build a wall in the BVI, so I guess their reluctance to fix it is understandable.

....graveyards should be maintained. Still show respect and honour to those who have passed on, and still be able to visit and put a few flowers in memory of them. It should be a pleasant environment. Grass cut and regular maintainence.
