ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has reported it is seeing another rise in reports of incidents involving persons with mental illness or those displaying similar behaviour.

According to a press release from the RVIPF today, February 23, 2022, last night, a Long Bush female resident reported that she responded to a knock at her door around 9:30pm.

“A man entered and tried to force himself on her,” the RVIPF stated, adding that persons in the area responded to her cries for help and the perpetrator who appeared to be unbalanced was apprehended and taken to the Behavioural Ward of Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital for evaluation.

“Both the female victim and the person who came to her aid received injuries in the scuffle.”

Frequent incidents

Police said at least three females reported being grabbed or nearly grabbed by a known mentally ill male over the last two weeks. Two of the incidents were in the Road Town area and another was at Long Bay, Beef Island.

Over a week ago, a male destroyed the windscreens of 26 vehicles parked in the Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital parking lot with a stick.

Police said the man is presently under observations at the Behavioural Ward of the hospital.

“A few days later, the owner of another three vehicles found motor oil thrown on their vehicles while parked adjacent to Republic Bank.”

Police said while charges cannot be brought against persons confirmed to be mentally ill by law, the RVIPF is asking that persons report any such incidents immediately so the individual can be apprehended. It said persons should also be watchful of the environs.

RVIPF reported a rise in such incidents in August of 2021.

BVI is in need of a facility for the mentally challenged. Enough resources are being directed towards mental health care in the territory and as such these incidents will continue to rise. Mental Health is being over looked on so many levels.

No one should open their doors at night or day to strangers. I truly believe that if I cannot see you in the daytime, I sure as hell don't want to see you at night. Why did she open her door? 9:30 at night is not a time someone comes visiting. People, use the good sense the Lord gave you, even the schools teach children about stranger danger. Sorry, she and her rescuer got injured. A lot of dangerous people out there. SMDH

How many years have we had mentally challenged people walking the streets? Have we known them to trouble or try to harm anyone? NO. Don't you think it strange that after this vaccine all of a sudden you see this news about mentally challenged people? Please check these people out and see what is really wrong with them. People don't just go up to people's houses in the night like that.
