Mentally challenged Walter Springette charged in SCB shooting probe

SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI– Officers of the Criminal Investigation Department have charged a man believed to be of unstable mind in connection with a shooting in Sea Cows Bay on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, a story carried by this news centre.

According to a press release from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force today, June 9, 2023, Walter Springette, 37, of Sea Cows Bay was charged yesterday with wounding and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

“His arrest follows investigations into a shooting in Sea Cows Bay early Tuesday evening resulting in one man being injured. The victim reported to the hospital with a single wound to his bac,” the RVIPF stated in the press release.

Springette will appear before the Magistrate’s Court at the next available sitting.

Police said investigations into the matter are ongoing.

According to unconfirmed reports reaching our newsroom, Springette was seen with a firearm and another man attempted to disarm him but ended up being wounded instead.

    Walter is actually a very smart person. He understands that our society is selfish and greedy and most people take more than they need.

    Walter needs a job doing cool stuff like farming or adventure tourism!

      You are so on point! People calling Walter crazy and stupid, he is none of these things. He is quite handy with his work and if you talk to him he can hold a good conversation with you; he knows things. People just see him out there and judge him. A lot of his behavior is reaction to mistreatment and lack of proper developmental care. You give Walter a job, he will work, just don't abuse and use him or he will react in an unkind manner. Please stop dealing Walter drugs! You know who you are!
      Walter will tell you the honest truth, you all hearing a biased report. That boy in the hospital abused Walter with that gun. Walter fought back and got it from him and used it on him but in a different manner. Walter is no fool, stop treating him like one! I wish him all the best and I hope that his one sister who always looking out for him never gives up on her brother. He is a good guy. And I believe if he cleans up his act he will be a productive member of this society again. I wish him all the best!

      I may be wrong but I am thinking the same thing. If you are trying to disarm someone obviously you are facing each other grabbing for the gun and if the gun discharge you would get hit in the torso or stomach or even the leg or foot. The odd part is how he ended up getting shot in the back. Maybe the guy did lose grip of the gun and went to run and Walter shot him in the back. The only two people that can answer that question is Walter and the guy that got shot in the back.

    If Walter or another mentality unstable person end up killing someone they are going to get a mental certificate and put in a mental institution. I try to avoid anyone that is mentality unstable sans they can snap at any moment. When the one was smashing vehicles with the iron rod some of you were laughing about security run and where was security. Can you blame them? He would have turn the iron rod on them and start beating them like he was beating the car’s windshield. When mentality unstable people flip out for some reason they develop extra strength.

    Some is saying the one that people is calling the Good Samaritan is the one that started the whole thing, he draw the gun on Walter to intimidate him and Walter for some reason manage to get the gun, dude took off running and Walter blast him in the back.

    A few people in my time but u would say this Walter is not that far off as people got him to be.


    There's a lot of story behind this incident and unless you know people close the situation there will be a lot of hear say.


    SCB got action lately. Man chopping man with machete, lady hiding man for 2 years and now man getting shot by the mental.

The one that got shot pull the gun on Walter first as a joke they tussle for the gun and it ended up in Walter hand, the guy try to dip and Walter maybe out of fear shot him in the back as he was running away.     They are always beating up this guy for nothing. I once saw 3 guys jump this dude and beat him up from what I saw he did nothing, thank God a big dude stepped in and helped him. So, maybe these are the reasons why he had to get a gun for his own protection maybe just tired of getting beat up and taking advantage of...At times we have to relax, step back, think a little, and ask.Why?.

    It seems to be an acknowledgement that Mr. Springette is mentally ill. If so , he needs medical help . Instead, he is being fling in jail and treated as a stable individual. Time served, he will be probably be tun loose on the streets again. Locking him up without treatment is neither helping him nor the community. We have a tendency to ignore problems in the community with the hope that in time they will fix themselves and go away. That is wishful thinking. A community not only comprises the good but also the bad and the ugly. This is the reality and we have to deal with all. Mentally issue is not one of those problems that goes away with delay, procrastination, or overcome by events(IBE). It requires proactive action.

    The B.V.I government need to build a mental institution, so that the mentally impaired have somewhere to be housed. Something needs to be done Mr. Premier, please help them before someone gets hurt, we just can’t have these people roaming in the community like that. They can be reformed.

    First I will say, please don’t mistreat Walter in jail, he was only defending himself from a bully. I have seen on many occasions how he is jumped on and pushed around by others that think because he is slow it is ok to treat him in that manner. The guy that got shot should be the one in jail, he instigated the whole thing. Walter don’t have any money to buy a gun, even the guys that sells guns WILL NOT SELL A GUN TO WALTER because that is going to lead back to them and they don’t want that type of heat on their back, so get that straight. DUDE PULL OUT THE GUN TO SCARE OR INTIMIDATE WALTER BECAUSE THEY ARE ALWAYS TROUBLING WALTER OR PICKING ON HIM AND LAYING THEIR HANDS ON HIM.     I have had the opportunity to speak to Walter outside of my job and he is an awesome person. He can hold a conversation but you got to know how to take to him. Don’t see him for his disability and he will surprise you. I once spoke to him about the cutlass drama he always involved in and he told me people keep troubling him. I am not able to put my views on this matter given my position but I DO HOPE that proper investigation reveal the truth. Law and Police should ALWAYS seek the trust not a guilty conviction. Investigate the “victim” also!
