ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Citing that there have many incidences where men have been caught up in negative activities or situations, a Men’s Empowerment Expo is seeking to counter the social problem by helping to fashion men to be more responsible individuals.

The Expo, which is targeting men from age 16 and above, is slated to begin this evening April 13, 2012 at UP’s Cineplex and continue on Saturday April 14, 2012 at the Moorings.

The theme of the Men’s Empowerment Expo is “Stepping it Up” and according to one of the organisers, Shaina Smith of Smith and Associates, the Expo seeks to get men to “start to step it up, to take up their position as leaders, fathers and husbands in the community as they should and create an environment that would help them to make better decisions”.

“There has been a push for gender equality but there has been an imbalance since women seem to have surpassed the men... It’s not an event but a process of rebuilding the community in areas where needed...This is about community and we want to rebuild the community one man at a time,” added Smith while on the radio programme Umoja on Thursday April 12, 2012.

The Men’s Empowerment Expo, it was said, is the brainchild of Mr. Neil Cline, who said he saw the need for such a workshop and decided to get Smith involved due to her planning ability.

This evening will see a pre-conference or social party downstairs at UP’s Cineplex where a motivational speech will be given by Kevin ‘OJ’ Smith.

The activity on Saturday begins at 8:30 a.m. as the some 150 persons expected would be treated to breakfast at the Moorings before the session starts at around 9:30 a.m.

The Men’s Empowerment Expo follows closely on the heels of the Little Speaker’s Touch life skills programme entitled “SHAPE UP”, which wraps up today at the 6th District Community Centre.

More than 40 young ladies aged 10-18 from across the island of Tortola are attending the 2-week programme. Areas of focus include Best Public Speaking Practices, Leadership and Development, Table Etiquette and Setting and Dressing for Success.

Just out of curiosity, is there someone you think would be a better motivational speaker? Would you like to suggest that person? I'm not one of the organizers but I think I can safely say, that having heard Mr. Smith speak several times, in different settings, church, meetings, etc., he's quite a good speaker. People listen to what he says, even if they don't agree with him, they will at least say that they liked what he said, or how he said it. He's respectful (unusual in this day and age) and if he criticizes something he will usually have an alternative to suggest. Hope that helps you to have a better understanding of why he may have been chosen.

Boy alya people ain easy at all. Give OJ a break. We are all human being and are subjected to making mistakes. This is indeed a timely seminar. If such a seminar can be organized for women why can't there be one for men.

The majority of men in our community are losers. They are not good fathers, they are not good providers and they are not good husbands and lovers. And they will not go to this forum because they don;t feel nothing wrong with them. They are simply pathetic

As I read these comments, I cannot help but feel like they are made by men or little boys. This is why they are walking the road they are. They fail to accept help and critizes everything positive - then when they go to court they expect to convince the magistrate/judge that they are sorry for their actions and need help. Why go to court and lie as opposed to attending workshops like these and learning positive things to engage in. OJ is a very good example of how you negative guys should be. Stop writing things you have no proof of and scandling people s name; stop sitting infront of the television all day and learning to rob people of what they work hard to gain and find yourself reading and listening to positive people.
