ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- From Monday, June 12 to Sunday, June 18, 2023, the Virgin Islands (VI) will be observing Men’s Mental Health Week, with the aims of prioritising Men’s health, encouraging them to seek preventive care, and engaging in conversations about important health issues. This is according to Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9).

“This timing provides an excellent opportunity to engage fathers, brothers, sons, and male friends in discussions about their health while emphasising the significance of men’s well-being within the context of family and community,” the Minister said in a statement released on June 12, 2023.

Stigmas not only in VI but worldwide

Hon Wheatley added, “The theme for this year’s observation is ‘Men’s Health and the Internet’. This emphasizes the impact of technology and social media on men’s mental health. We all know that a stigma exists regarding men’s mental health, and unfortunately, some men are still uncomfortable discussing their problems openly.”

He added the stigma is not only in the VI, but worldwide and it is this stigma that causes many individuals to suffer in silence.

“However, in recent years, we have witnessed a significant shift in conversations surrounding mental health. People are now prioritising their mental well-being with the same level of seriousness as their physical health.”

He added that while the topic is changing with more awareness campaigns and observations, there is still a long way to go to help men feel comfortable enough to speak out about their mental health.

Tackling issues before escalation

“Although you might feel embarrassed or uncomfortable talking about your mental health; the bravest thing you can do is tackle the issue before it becomes a problem. Remember, you are not alone. Many others here in the Virgin Islands are experiencing the same emotions and struggling to find ways to cope. Let us create an environment to accommodate them as they speak up,” he added.

The Minister said for Men’s Mental Health Week 2023, there is a need to have the conversations and keep them going, while he encouraged activities like encouraging men to take health checkups, and information sessions, and engage in physical activities.

“Let us embrace Men’s Health Week 2023 as a time to raise awareness, foster open conversations, and empower men to take control of their physical and mental well-being. Together, we can make a difference and inspire a healthier future for all,” he added.

have a run, hit the gym, exercise relieves stress, keep your circle small and with people who have the same values as you. become the best version of yourself everyday, do not let these politicians and world leaders manage how and what you think of yourself. Become the best and do the best with everything you do on this earth.
    Strong body! Strong mind!

People are afraid to talk about their problems because we live in a community where people love to judge others and gossip. Also, some of those people who work in the Health Service love to go through your personal information and share it with their friends and family....the fat one from Purcell was very popular for that. Wicked set a people.

Exercising is extremely important but what you put in your body is even more important. Getting a yearly physical is also imperative. Pay attention to hereditary illnesses and other conditions that can stay hidden. Limit alcohol and smoking. Most of all avoid stress!

is the issue when discussing any man's problems in person or remotely(phone, internet, etc.). Privacy of personal information is paramount for most educated intelligent men. Most men with any problems will read, research and listen but don't speak about a problem until a bona fide reliable source for a diagnosis and cure is located.

If you are serious about your mental health, who cares who knows!? If other people's lack of discretion stops you from taking charge of your health, I feel bad for you.

Somebody, please bell this cat. The Hon Wheatley ( D-9) needs to act more and less talk. It seems like he got a ministry again, for there was no one else on the bench. Show us what you can do through action, not Yalu, talk, etc. It is redemption time show the people you are not an empty suit.
