McMaster returns with new National Record in Men’s 400M Hurdles
The Virgin Islander and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games gold medalist clocked 47.50 to place second in his season opener hurdles race held at Mt San Antonio College (SAC), bettering his National Record of 47.54 established in 2018.
The 23-year-old McMaster, who did not compete in the 400m hurdles in a shortened 2020 campaign, was stride for stride for the first 250m with eventual race winner American Rai Benjamin (47.13), who found a second gear with 150m to go to finish in a World Leading time.
McMaster ranked #2 in world
McMaster, who has already qualified for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, held his form and did well to hold off a fast-finishing Alison Dos Santos (47.68) of Brazil. Dos Santos, the 2019 Pan American Games champion, also established a National Record.
McMaster’s time on Sunday ranks him Number 2 in the world.
Among those hailing the performance of McMaster was Deputy Premier and Sports Minister Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), who said “I have a wonderful feeling about Tokyo. We are going to witness something special!”
