BIRMINGHAM, UK – VI defending champion Kyron A. McMaster has sprinted to victory to retain gold in the men's 400m Hurdles final, today, August 6, 2022, at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham 2022.

Coming in with a time of 48.93 seconds, McMaster’s win placed him ahead of Jamaica and Guernsey who came in second and third respectively.

In 2018, McMaster’s 400m hurdle win gave the Virgin Islands its first ever Commonwealth gold at a time when the territory was still recovering from the destruction left by Hurricanes Irma and Maria a year earlier.

When McMaster takes to the podium for his gold medal, the territorial song 'Oh British Virgin Islands' rather than ‘God Save the Queen’ will mark the athlete’s successful defense at retaining the VI's first Commonwealth gold medal title.

Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) will bring more details.

You know this tournament is basically celebrating the UK ruling half the planet.

If you want true independence don’t participate in the commonwealth games as it is “the white men’s” celebration.

While our territorial song was an instrumental and big up the individual. It would have been even better to hear the lyrics of the song. Many don't know the words which has so much meaning to our territory. Just my opinion

Kyron, congratulations on capturing gold in the 400M hurdles at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. It is a tremendous feat. And it was a historic and buoyant moment for the Virgin Islands [British]. The rendition of the territotial song brought great joy and was music to Virgin Islanders’ ears at home and abroad. Well done!

Who else saw McMaster's interview after his winning performance big up Blinky and Scoup for the inspiration to go out and performance against the odds? Got to love this guy, real and down to earth. How could anyone not want him to succeed.

Kudos to Kyron for such an excellent performance at the Commonwealth games. Continue to be humble and do what you like to do best. In the athletic arena it is evident that there is a place for people like you. Stay focused and be blessed.

Congratulations to Kyron! However you were on an international platform and did an interview in which millions of people were watching and you displayed utter ignorance and illiteracy.

We wonder why no one takes us seriously. You could’ve thanked God , your parents, you’re coach and team members but you choose to mention Scoop and binky. They could’ve been mentioned in your interview when you came back to the BVI and were interviewed by 284 Media or JTV. We need better PR training for our athletes.

While I think your words "utter ignorance and illiteracy' are a bit harsh, I do agree that the opportunity could have been better used. The reference to Scoop and Binky was funny, but it was like sitting with a group of strangers at dinner and telling "inside" jokes that only one or two people understand. You're right in suggesting that the local reference and dialect would have been better-suited to a local interview.
I also agree with you that our athletes need to be trained in how to respond to questions and how to sell the BVI when they're on the world stage. Perhaps the Tourist Board, the Olympic Association, or GIS can spearhead this.

The interview was with local people for local audience. Please get your facts straight. He had interviews with other tv companies and no mention was made of that. He was well aware the interview was for the people back home. You are the one who is ignorant.

Well said. He was being interviewed by the local media representative for the BVI Olympic Committee.. It was solely for the audience back home. So the previous comments are totally off based..

Subsequent to my response to "My opinions", I saw the interview that showed the context in which Kyron's comment was made. Watching the entire thing, and not just the Scoop/Binky comment in isolation, I saw an articulate, mature young man with a wonderful sense of humour. I hope that "My opinions" has had a chance to see the entire interview as well.

Having witnessed firsthand Kyron and all of our pro athletes give interviews with international media following their performances at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and Tokyo 2020 Olympics, I can say that you have absolutely nothing to be concerned about and plenty to be proud of. The athletes are articulate, mature and professional in their presentation and are true ambassadors for the Virgin Islands. Interviews are recorded separately and they are aware of their audience and will adapt accordingly.
