ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has regarded VI hurdler Kyron A. McMaster as one of the greatest ambassadors in the territory’s history.

The Premier made the remark on August 6, 2022, following McMaster’s successful defense of the Men’s 400m hurdles title at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom, having previously won the medal in 2018 in Australia.

“Kyron McMaster, you are extremely special, and we are blessed to have you wear our national colors and fly our flag!,” the Premier remarked.

“You are one of the greatest ambassadors in our history, and we are tremendously proud of this incredible achievement. We know that you have much more to give. God bless you and God bless these beautiful Virgin Islands,” he added.

No doubt 'we are special' - Hon Wheatley

To make his point, Hon Wheatley detailed that the Commonwealth Games is comprised of large nations such as India with 1.3 billion people; Pakistan with over 200 million people; Nigeria with 174 million; Bangladesh with 173 million; South Africa at close to 55 million people; England at over 50 million people; Canada at 38 million and Australia at 27 million amongst other large nations.

“The British Virgin Islands is among the smallest Commonwealth countries with a population of around 35,000, but we have won gold over countries as much as 38,000 times our size. What are the odds of that? There is no doubt we are special,” he said.

Meanwhile, McMaster after successfully defending the title and coming in at a time of 48.93, said he felt the VI needed the medal more than him this trip around.

“For me, I just wanted to get through injury free. That was the biggest thing for me,” McMaster said in an interview with regional broadcaster SportsMax TV following his gold medal race.

... how many more ambassadors you would have for the country if funds were properly allocated for the most decorated sport in the BVI. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE

Congratulations to you Kyron and the entire BVI! You have put us on the map! Please however be more strategic with your interviews, discern when to be serious and when to joke around. Remember the world is watching.

The problem is there are always those who want to dictate to others what and when to talk and laugh. There is no regulation that you cannot make a joke when you are being interviewed. Struupes man. You need to lighten up and relax, life is too short.

Kyron had finished all his world and regional press interview and was talking to BVI Olympic Committee when he cracked the joke, the first big smile we got after his stupendous win (I actually wish the opposite - that he'd been more joyous, in his accomplisgment doing a dance of honour with the BVI flag). Of course he can crack a joke with we all. Its you who need to broaden your horizon, a Facebook quick aint the BBC!

Hope he would treated like an Ambassador as the Premier says he is.

Ambassador for sure! Amazing feat for such a small country as ours. Keep chasing the gold sir, we wish you much success. But come come what may, you ARE our gold and always will be. Agree that this, his country that he gives so much for will truly give him the support he needs.
  • I disagree, maybe #2 for me. (08/08/2022, 18:31) Like (13) Dislike (2) Reply
Ms Hodge is still my favourite BVI athlete. Look what she did in the last Carifta games marvelous, excellent, she ended up with 3 Gold and the Highest award, She has got to be # 1 by far...

You are comparing apples to oranges my friend..Ms Hodge is a junior athlete. Mr. McMaster has competed and has been successful at all levels. This man has too many accomplishments to mention. Please let Ms. Hodge mature gracefully. Her time will come but for now stop the nonsense!!! Go BVi????????
    • I agree with Hodge being #1 (09/08/2022, 05:47) Like (0) Dislike (1) Reply
