ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – As dusk fell and the Ceres 10k series drew to a close, Zebalon McLean was able to take advantage of an error by Emrol Amsterdam to over take him and finish second in the season’s finale and claim the championship on Saturday November 5, 2011.

By the time they reached the Pub on the return leg of the race, Steve Asson was well ahead with Amsterdam second and McLean third, but much to McLean’s surprise as he came down towards the roundabout by Bobby’s he realized he was now ahead and was able to hold on through the pain to take second on the night and claim the 2011 Men’s Championship overall.

“A long series; each race was 6.2 miles so it took a lot of effort, but I’m glad I made it. Amsterdam was ahead, took a wrong turn and by the time he got back I was ahead,” Commented McLean. "It was just the luck of the draw.”

Steve Asson romped home in a time of 39 minutes, 53.17 seconds, nearly 3 minutes ahead of McLean, with an upset and frustrated Amsterdam 30 seconds back of McLean.

“Once you get close to the finish you get strength and energy and once you get that, then you must do well,” stated Asson

Second overall though was Maria Mays in a time of 42:19.12. She also finished second in the Women’s Championship behind Meriel Steadman. Claire Louis Wiley was second home in the Female Division and claimed the bronze overall with a time of 48:01.84. Awards for the top places and series finishers were held immediately after the race. Stephanie Russ Penn made the presentations and concluded the series with thanking the sponsors, volunteers and encouraging the athletes “To keep on Running”.

Race Organiser and competitor, Kay Reddy, is already working on the next event.

“The course, today gave the runners an opportunity to run 6 miles of the 6th Annual BVI Half Marathon course which takes place on November 19th,” she said. Over 30 persons have pre-registered for the Race which is sponsored by Ogier and Deloite along with Dasani.

As for her time in the 10k, she said, “some days you just don’t have it in you!”
