SPANISH TOWN, Virgin Gorda, VI - The 2013 edition of Jazz on the Hill will take on a new feature this year; a massive launch party, which has been timely placed to coincide with Valentine's Day celebrations in February 2013.

Dubbed as a Pre-Valentine's event, the promotional party is set for February 9, 2013 at Mooney Bay with North Sound, Virgin Gorda expected to welcome the sounds of seasoned jazz musician and New York native Tom Browne. He will be joined by local performers Marlon Abner's profile band and Pan jazz entertainment and vocalist Lynne Hawkins.

"The launch party on February 9, will be a prelude of the true festival to he held on 26th and 27th April, 2013, which is much anticipated," said Principal of the St. Mary's School at Virgin Gorda Laura J. Fox. She, along with Suzanne Morris, Sally Ann Riley, Sean Rose and Denise R. Reovan are some of the key players in this year's organising.

The announcement was made during a press briefing on Saturday January 19, 2013 at the Coco Maya Restaurant, Bar and Lounge. According to Ms. Fox, the prelude event was organized to give persons a feel of what the actual Jazz on the Hill will be. "We want to attract people of all levels even the youths and we feel that the pre-Valentine's event perfectly suits that," said Ms Fox.

Despite many challenges in the past, the committee members said Jazz on the Hill has been much of a success in years gone by, raising $8,000 to $20,000 which was used to develop the St. Mary's School. Proceeds this year will go to the St. Mary's School and the early childhood Centre in Vally, Virgin Gorda.

Jazz on the Hill will be held at St. Mary's Hill and will feature the performances of local, regional and international artistes. These would include renowned trumpeter Tom Browne, the vocal stylings of Eve Cornelious, saxophonist Ronnie Laws, among several others.

With a specially created full moon atmosphere for the festival of Jazz on the Hill on April 26 and 27, 2013, patrons are being assured of a relaxed party setting with corporate dining. "Patrons looking for corporate dining experience will be able to purchase seats in advance for meals with wine and front row seats to enjoy the allure of several talented artists. "For those who wish to enjoy the show beachside or at the intimate bar, a small entrance fee will allow them freedom to take part in this not to be missed event," said Ms Fox.

The jazz performances will be followed by Coco Maya's electric full moon party complete with DJs to top the night off.

The organizing committee says safety and security are at the top of their agenda as well as considerations for inclement weather, travels and transport.

The staging of Jazz on the Hill will make its eight-year mark this April.

If you as a non-white person (I assume that you are not white) attend the event, that will be one reason to say that it is not only for the whites. From what I can see, this is a very public event. There are even different levels of patronage, as it appears that provision has been made for those who cannot or might not wish to afford the full dining experience. Remember, you personally have the power to make it a not-only-for-the-whites outing.

Do go out and support this worthy cause. Our schools, public or private, need all the resources and help that we can give them.

True, 'w' could have been interpreted to mean the wealthy, though I still believe the first interpretation might have been intended, given the hesitancy to spell out the word. Thank you for your perspective, though.

It's such a reckless and shameful thing to assume they meant white!!!

Reflection. Your post leaves me open-mouthed. What a silly and inappropriate (to put it mildly) thing to say. I never thought I'd encounter a remark like that in the BVI. If BVI blacks don't attend JOTH that's their prerogative. The BVI is still a free country and anyone, whatever their reason, may choose to attend or not attend the event. Because presumably the majority of attendees to JOTH are white, does not at all mean or even suggest that it's a "whites only" event. The show's organisers would not, I'm certain, have anything to do with it if, among other reasons,it was regarded as an event for a certain group only.
By the way, just in case you forgot or don't know, jazz was invented by blacks and some of today's best jazz is still being played by black musicians (not to take away anything from white jazz artists). Also many of the JOTH
performing artists have been black including a young lady whom I was privileged to listen to and whose ancestry is Virgin Gordian going back about 2 generations.
Shame on you! Best to JOTH and its organisers.
