Mario Carter qualifies for Carifta 53

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands’ (VI) team for Carifta 53 has increased with the qualification of Mario Carter.

Carter qualified in the U20 400M with a time of 48.24 seconds at the 2026 ESHS Inter-House Sports Day at the A.O Shirley Recreation Ground in Tortola. 

With his qualification, Team VI now has 5 qualifiers with 3 in sprint events and 1 in the field event. 

Double Qualifications 

Meanwhile, Ty’Rique Charles and J'Den Jackson secured double qualifications, having previously qualified in early February 2026. 

Charles added the 100M to his Carifta 53 qualifications with an 11.18s run at the ESHS Inter-House Sports Day. 

Jackson secured his second qualifier in the 200M at the Dag Samuels Development Meet #4 at the A.O Shirley Recreation Ground on February 28, 2026, with a time of 21.66 seconds. 

CARIFTA 2026

The other athletes to qualify for Carifta 53 so far are M'Kenzii Crabbe (200M) and T’Keiya Smith (high jump). 

The 2026 Carifta Games will be hosted at the Kirani James Athletics Stadium in Grenada from April 4 to 6, 2026. This year’s games will be held under the theme ‘Passion Drives Performance’. 

The annual games showcase top under-18 and under-20 athletes from across the Caribbean.

This will be the fourth time Grenada will be hosting the Carifta Games, having previously hosted in 2008, 2016, and 2024.
