LONG BUSH, Tortola, VI- The technical team of the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) is still working on system maintenance, which has prolonged a scheduled power outage across parts of the Territory.

Reports reaching our News Centre indicate that some schoolchildren are unable to attend school, and a few workers in the private and public sectors have either called in absent or late.

According to a statement released by the BVIEC this morning, Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the scheduled outage began last night, Monday, June 9, 2025, with power expected to be returned by 6:00 AM today.

Affected areas include a portion of Road Town, and all areas in between to East End, Beef Island, Great Camanoe, Scrub Island, Marina Cay, and all of Virgin Gorda.

Critical system maintenance @ Long Bush Substation

After over eleven hours, the outage has been extended with the team carrying out “critical system maintenance at the Long Bush Substation”.

The maintenance includes the replacement of voltage transformers and deep cleaning of the Bus Section — essential components that connect to feeders supplying electricity from Road Town to East End, Beef Island, Scrub Island, Great Camanoe, Marina Cay and the island of Virgin Gorda.

“This intensive work is part of a scheduled two-year maintenance cycle to strengthen system reliability and prevent future outages,” the BVIEC said.

Apologies for the inconvenience

The BVIEC apologised to customers for the delay and thanked them for their continued patience as work continues to safely restore power and maintain a reliable energy supply.

“Please know that this maintenance was necessary to support the long-term stability and reliability of the Territory’s electricity supply.”

75% hurricane ready yet there is no backup/redundancy to keep power on, even if for temporary periods, where the main source has to be turned off for alleged maintenance. One loi after the next meh boy.

It's better they plan the outage than for the system to go down when they are unaware, with out repair parts etc...
