ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A man who visited the National Health Insurance (NHI) at Joshua J. Smith Building today, February 26, 2024, had to be taken to Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital after he passed out from allegedly inhaling smoke.

Information is sketchy; however, our News Centre was told the incident occurred just before midday.

Other persons also reportedly complained of smelling some sort of fumes.

The man told our newsroom the smell made him nauseated and he ended up at the hospital. He said he did not return to NHI after being discharged.

Electrical wire was burning

Fire and Rescue Services was called in.

Chief Fire Officer Zebalon A. McLean confirmed that Fire and Rescue Services Department received a call around 11:59 AM.

"We have no reports of illness or injury as a result of the smoke," Mr McLean stated.

The Chief Fire Officer said; however, he was not in a position to say what was the cause of the 'smoke'.

A senior official at Social Security Board told our news centre that the staff was evacuated from the building due to the burning smell from an electrical wire. "The electrician came and rectified the problem within an hour and everything was back to normal."

The official also said they were unaware of anyone having to go to hospital as a result of the smoke inhalation.

We will provide more information as it comes in.

So smoke caused only him to go to the hospital? Maybe he has another underlying condition.
