CARROT BAY, Tortola, VI- A sanitation worker was injured after a small propane tank exploded in a garbage truck in Carrot Bay on Thursday evening, August 27, 2026.

According to reports reaching our News Centre, a used propane tank was placed in a garbage bin at Carrot Bay, and it exploded while being compacted by the garbage truck.

One of the operators of the garbage truck reportedly suffered minor injuries.

Garbage truck saved

In order to save the garbage truck from being destroyed by the fire that resulted, the garbage was offloaded from the truck.

Fire and Rescue Services were called in to put out the garbage fire.

The public is being reminded to never place used gas tanks, whether propane, helium or other, inside a garbage bin, as the consequences could be tragic.

I keep saying in this district, "they have been doing things wrong for so long that they think it's right"! When you come along and correct them, you become their enemy.

You got to shake your head at how stupid some of these dingbats on the Island can be. The employee could have been killed over someone’s stupidity. How you pit a used propane tank in a garbage bin? Tell you one thing, they would have had to fire me, I was not putting my life in danger, the garbage truck would had blown up. A garbage truck can be replaced not a human life.

Why would anyone place a tank in a garbage bin? That was just as ignorant as one gets, or was it done on purpose? Glad the worker will be alright. I apologize from the bottom of my heart for the fact that some people are born stupid and ignorant.

I havr no idea what happened. But this could be the opportunity to classify our trash properly, & make recycling mandatory. Speedy recover to the injured person.

People here love to become your enemy when you tell them right from wrong or correct them. This is why I stay far away from them and let them use their common sense if they have any to figure things out.
