ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI — The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) confirmed today that 21‑year‑old Jason Smith has been remanded in custody after being found guilty on three counts of Robbery and one count of Possession of Proceeds of Criminal Conduct.

The convictions arise from an incident on June 11, 2023, in the parking lot of UP’s Cineplex. At about 11:00 PM, the complainant and three other victims, who had just left a movie, were approached by a man wearing dark clothing and armed with a firearm. The assailant pointed the weapon at the group and demanded mobile phones and jewellery. Two of the victims were struck in the head during the robbery and suffered lacerations. The victims complied and handed over their phones and jewellery before the perpetrator fled the scene with the stolen items.

A report was made to the Road Town Police Station shortly after the incident, and an investigation was launched by RVIPF officers. Court proceedings concluded on July 30, 2026, when Supreme Court Justice Angelica Teelucksingh found Smith guilty of the four offences. Justice Teelucksingh ordered that Smith remain in custody pending sentencing, which is scheduled for September 18, 2026.

AG Commissioner of Police praised investigators

Acting Commissioner of Police Jacqueline E. Vanterpool praised the work of investigators and prosecutors in the case, saying the conviction “reflects the continued dedication of our officers and investigators in bringing offenders before the courts.” She noted that robbery is a serious offence with lasting effects on victims and community safety, and expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, describing its role as central to the successful prosecution.

“The RVIPF remains committed to protecting the community, investigating serious offences, and supporting the judicial process in ensuring that offenders are held accountable,” the force said in a statement.

Sentencing will determine Smith’s penalty for the robberies and possession of proceeds of criminal conduct.
