TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- A major overhaul of the parking and traffic system at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport is on the cards, Managing Director of the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) Mr Kurt A.G. Menal has informed.

Speaking as a guest of JTV’s Big Story on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, Mr Menal told host Cathy O. Richards that multiple changes are to come into effect at the airport within the next three months.

Responding to queries about the faulty parking ticketing system, Mr Menal said there currently exists a Request for Proposal for a new pay-on-foot system.

“So frankly, the system that was implemented years ago, it was not suited to the environment, hence the reason why it breaks down all the time and we constantly have to do maintenance, so we are doing our very best; however, it has reached the point where we absolutely [need to] change it over."

Traffic in front airport terminal to be re-routed

The BVIAA MD further said there is also a need to re-route traffic from the front of the airport terminal, due to regulatory requirements.

"We will be required to move the traffic but at the same time we are taking the opportunity to cause that to enhance the custom experience."

At the time of the interview, Manal said he did not have the full plan at hand and was unable to give more details; however, he said it will be made public in the coming weeks.

He said the re-routing of the traffic should come in the next three or four months but it will be made public, “because you need a high level of sensitisation, because you are accustomed to coming in one way [and] we don't want you to come one day and you have to go left instead of right."

Menal, a St Lucia National, has worked with airports around the Caribbean for the past 25 years.

He took up the post of BVIAA Managing Director in January 2022.

Prior to his appointment in the VI, he was Deputy General Manager – Operations with the Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago.

If traffic is routed from the front of airport, where is it going to ? There are not too many options. Provisions need to be made in the front for drop off and pick up. In order to relieved traffic in the front make the first two hours free in short/term parking. Employ security officers to keep traffic moving in the front. Provide dedicated parking lanes in front for on demand taxi drivers.

Fix these filthy sewerage leaking road, especially in district 7, and elsewhere.
In addition to that, too many trees and bushes binding gabbage among them.
True, the parking and traffic way to the Airport Terminal must not be overlooked, but how much can you do to earn your 4 + years pay for employment in the next Month and a half? Not much.
We demand a refund, immediately for projects paid for, that have not been completed, VIP.

It have a set of empty land there at trellis bay end that can be used as parking. They can even make a park there and make people pay a monthly fees to park like those working off island and are parking at trellis. Trellis bay market is charging per month to use theirs.

Why come to the public every time with some news and can't say where the route would be and which new major airline it is? The director position isn't of that public relationship your doing, acting like you trying to have the people like you, or you are being interviewed by the public for a job. You have staff who are good at marketing and public relation give them a chance, leave the trini lady far from here.

I am betting the road in front of the airport will be taxi only and everyone else will be going into the car park to drop off and they will make a new entrance into the car park. You can no longer be that close to larger airports for drop off and pick up.

Great. Let's take an empty airport parking lot and give everyone in it tickets!
Who comes up with this nonsense? If people want to come to the BVI we should be thankful. We should give then free stuff!
Everything can not be about making money!

As soon as the local goes to school then works in the airport management position and gains experience they can become the manager. Getting a job because of your last name coming to an end.

"need to re-route traffic from the front of the airport terminal, due to regulatory requirements" Every airport in the entire world is set up that way..... drop off / pickup is standard at front- don't make people walk all over the place in the heat with all their bags. this is nonsense.
