Magistrate expresses concern about ‘challenged’ man

Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards expressed concern when defendant Walter Springette appeared before the court on April 23, 2013.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Walter Springette, a resident of Sea Cows Bay, appeared before the Magistrate’s Court on April 24, 2013 but was not charged by the police. There was no announcement of an offence either by the prosecution.

Crown Counsel Leslie-Ann Faulkner though, explained that the issue that brought Springette to the Magistrate’s Court was an intrusion complaint.

The defendant allegedly entered someone’s home, sat on their couch, and examined their DVDs.

Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards suggested that Springette might need a television and DVD player to entertain himself.

Faulkner said that the Virtual Complainant (VC) in the matter went to the store on the day in question and when he returned, noticed that someone was in his home.

She further related that upon inspection, the VC saw the defendant sitting on his couch with some DVDs in his hand.

Magistrate Richards expressed that she was worried because Springette, no stranger to the court system, might yet have pending matters and was a little ‘challenged’.

She then proposed that the defendant’s family monitor him more closely as a result of this.

“He is one of those people, who because of his mental situation has been coming and we have been sending to the prison, because he [Walter] has been coming for years. I have already put him on probation…”

After fielding questions from the Magistrate, Springette’s surety informed the court that the defendant is an acquaintance of the VC and this may have led him to visit the home in the VC’s absence.

Before adjourning the matter, the Magistrate said that she would review what the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions suggests and have the defendant released into his surety’s care until the matter is called again.

Springette will return to the Magistrate’s Court on June 7, 2013.

People who are 'challenged' normally don't steal or attempt it with the intensity this dude does do it with. Lucky I ain't meet him in my place or else the cops woulda been rushing to lock ME up in order to pull me off he backside.
