ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Talk show host of BVI Forum, Edmund Maduro has accused the National Democratic Party (NDP) government of joining the rest of the world to commercialise health insurance and expressed the fear that persons may not have access to their contributions when they need it the most.

He claimed government is likely to put the monies collected to use other than what it will be intended for much, to the demise of the contributors.

“From what I have read, there is no provision for our government to take that money and insure our rights with any insurance companies,” said Mr Maduro.

He further alleged that Government will be taking the monies collected under the disguise of National Health Insurance (NHI), pool it and use at their own leisure.

He said the government will be collecting monies through the Social Security Board for health insurance and had made reference to a similar system in the USA that took advantage of the insurance. “In the United State at one time, when New York had in fact taken over its social security funds for its own use and so on and so forth, the Federal Government had to come in and bail them out. Insurance is insurance,” noted Mr Maduro.

He went on to explain that there will be times when one patient may have to pay large sums of monies for medical attention and damned the day when that patient needs his/her monies and they cannot get access to it. “We cannot have a National Health Insurance situation where when that money is needed it cannot be found because if it cannot be found the patient that requires that medical attention will die,” alleged Mr Maduro.

According to the talk show host, health care throughout the world has become strictly commercialised and even so in the Virgin Islands. “So when we are talking about insurance, that National Health Insurance has to be there when we are in need of it,” said the talk show host.

The right to choose where and when a person reaches out for medical attention should not be controlled by the Government’s NHI system, opined Mr Maduro, as he feels every person should have the right to choose their medical practitioner.

“That’s not what is happening we are being treated like sheep and goat taken to a veterinary officer, we are not being treated like human beings who have a right of choice.”

Mr Maduro alleged that VIslanders are being denied their rights from every corner, including legal and natural rights. “…dispossessed, we are being robbed, stripped, divest, expropriate and all these things,” Maduro stated.

He paralleled the conditions of the NHI to that of the Africans when they were captured and sold into slavery by their own people.

He warned that persons residing in the VI be more vigilant of what is happening around them as he further alleged that a number of things are to be done by the NDP Government without consulting with the people before. “A lot of things are being carried out by our leaders, we have no choice, it’s already a done deal, we have to accept it whether we like it or not.”

He challenged VIslanders to ask themselves the question as to whether or not they are being sold by their elected representatives. “Ask yourself that question from what you know as a person has been going on….. and for how much are we being sold and to whom are we being sold,” Maduro stressed.

Breach of person's freedom. is this constitutionally the right thing to do. let this thing be a choice, and for persons who can't prove that they have insurance otherwise, make it mandatory for them to go on it. Leave our freedom to opt in and out of it also.

People should have the right to choose, if not then NHI can be the path. Noone should be told, particularly, if they have their own private, and very acceptable, insurance, with proven reliability and immediate assistance.

The FSC is responsible for monitoring and supervising Insurance Companies. NHI should be no different. If the FSC cannot do it then it should be done by the FIA. Does the ministry of health have compliance specialist who can regulate NHI?

Mr. Maduro I applaud you for speaking up on behalf of so many of us who know that we are being placed back into slavery!!

The government DO NOT CARE about our RIGHTS. I voted NDP in last term but I guarantee you I will be thinking twice about my decision and no amount of flourish can save them.
