Maduro pleased with protocol signing between UK & VI

- Says NDP took over a “very difficult” government from a financial point of view
Maduro claims that the economy was disorganized when the new government of the National Democratic Party (NDP) came into power.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Local television host, Edmund Maduro of BVI Forum aired on Channel 51 said he is pleased with the Fiscal protocols signed for better financial management, between Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr. D. Orlando Smith and Minister for the Overseas Territories, Henry Bellingham MP recently.

The protocols were signed at a press conference at the Premiers Office on April 23, 2012 and according to Maduro, speaking on his show on Saturday April 28, 2012, he is happy about the protocols signed and said he understood exactly what Bellingham was implying when he said, "True dialogue and exchange of ideas, the VI can continue to have a well-run financial service in business and a well-run Territory from the standpoint of its finances."

The outspoken talk show host told his viewers that the topic of the show was not to bring down the previous government of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP), but claimed that one should make it abundantly clear that both Hon. Smith and Bellingham are correct when they said that the economy was disarrayed when the new government officials came into power.

Maduro continued by saying that this current government has taken over a very difficult government from a financial point of view.

Guest speaker on BVI Forum, Dickson Igwe said that based on his understandings of the contract signing between the VI and UK, the government does not have to submit its budget for pre-approval any longer.

Mr. Maduro interjected and added that, "it is clear that the United Kingdom Government is respected to the fullest by the position of our local government despite the financial difficulties existing in the BVI.”

He further stated that the whole objective of the signing, is that the VI can be at a place to stand up and be a government of recognition.

Referring to Mr. Bellingham’s statements, Mr. Maduro said that the UK MP honors the way the Virgin Islands has reached in development and he wants to help the VI to continue to develop along those lines.

Maduro stated that such a statement should be comforting for the Virgin Islands.
