Maduro & Hill credit close friendship for top results
They told this news site that they both have been among the top performers in the school during the five years during which time their friendship grew stronger. “We shared the same home room so we have most of the same classes together, we studied together, and we help each other with homework. I love her like a best friend she is so close to me,” said Hill.
The two are from the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) where according to the Principal Acting Mr Wade W. Tobin they had 180 students in the fifth form of which 153 were successful at the examinations this year.
“Unfortunately, 27 of our students were not successful. Of the persons passing, [there were 96 females and 57 males]. We are pleased to announce that 36 of you are honour students. The high honour students are two out of three in the Territory. ESHS has the top two students in the Territory...we had 88 grade 1 students, 51 grade 2 students, and 14 grade 3 students,” said Mr Tobin.
Valedictorian Maduro was quite ecstatic and excited about her results and equally so happy for the other students who would have worked hard during the two years.
“The excitement on their faces does the institution well and we are quite proud of this moment to see that the top two performing students in the Territory come from the ESHS institution.” said Maduro.
While enjoying the moment of being congratulated and returning same to her peers Maduro was keen on noting the works put in by the teachers of the school. “We have a very industrious hard working faculty and it demonstrates that our teachers are committed to the task. Despite the challenges they are doing an extremely good job. It has paid off today,” she said.
“Always try your best, always go to class and try your best, do not think that you cannot, because you can. Just stay focused,” was Maduro’s advice to those who are to follow through to the school leaving grade. Asked of her plans now, she said, “definitely college, after summer it’s college. I want to be a construction engineer.”
Hill’s advice was, “People think that I am just smart but I am very determined that’s why I got this space. You have to be determined to stay up late and do work, you have to be determined to go to your teachers after school and put in a little extra work, you just have to be determined. That’s my word to the other students.”
While Maduro plans to head off to college here in the Virgin Islands, Hill said that she will be heading to the University of Delaware to pursue studies in Civil Engineering.
