Maduro-Caines refutes not wanting com. centre for Purcell
Speaking at a rally in the 6th District last evening October 27, 2011, Mrs. Maduro-Caines also recommended a name for the $1.5M facility, which was officially opened on Monday September 12, 2011.
“Let me clarify one thing. There is a rumor that I did not want the people of Purcell to have a community center and that the National Democratic Party does not want anything good for Purcell. I refute those allegations right now, right here. The property on which the community center is built was bought under the NDP government. I am happy Purcell has a community center for I often say the people of the 6th district lack recreational facilities.”
According to the candidate, she highly suggests the community centre be named after Catherine & Gertrude Warner. “Two stalwarts of the 6th district who sold and leased lands to persons of this district at a very low rate so they could afford to build homes.”
I do not have to be loud and rumbustious
Although probably not referring to her counterpart and 6th District representative Omar Hodge, Mrs. Maduro-Caines noted that she has also heard “the talks” that she is too soft and if elected will be on the back bench and would not get anything done
But she responded to the critics by saying, “Tell me my people, how would you know what I would get done if I am not elected? Furthermore, when I am elected, I will be elected with a team of people who gets the job done whether I am on the front or back bench. I will be working with a team where no district or no one will be left behind.”
Mrs. Maduro-Caines also told the critics that sometimes the soft and quiet persons make the most respected and effective leaders.
“I do not have to be loud and rumbustious to get the job done. Take for instance, I visited and spoke about the state of the basketball court here in Purcell a few months ago. The week I visited our representative heard the news and visited the following week and now the youths of the Purcell area have an up graded basketball court. Tell me, was I elected when this was done? This is just an example of the kind of power a quiet and soft spoken leader can do inside and outside of the House of Assembly.”
Outlining a number of plans for the 6th district, Mrs. Maduro-Caines said if elected she would commit to seek to alleviate traffic woes for the people of Upper Free Bottom by having dialogue with the relevant land owners to widen roads or purchase property for alternate routes to that area, and seek to address the situation with Johnson Ghut, which she claimed has gotten worst after phases 1 and 2 were completed.
“Now phase 3 has begun which has caused much inconvenience to the residents in this area. I have been informed that no dialogue has been had with the people in the community about this project and yet millions continue to be spent on it. Ladies and gentlemen, $6 million was already spent we are told. I am puzzled as to how much more this will cost? How many more phases will be needed to get this project completed? I want this project to be completed so that the residents in the Purcell Estate area along with Ms. Hamm’s business place at Stone Haven will not have to be plagued with flooding, erosion of land and flattening of retaining walls whenever there are heavy rains.”
Although making it clear that she was not an engineer, Mrs. Maduro-Caines said she did not think phase 3 of Johnson Ghut was the solution to the problems faced when it rains in the 6th district.
“I, along with my other NDP colleagues will work along with our capable engineers at Public Works as well as other community professionals in the engineering field to finally put an end to this distressing, expensive and plaguing issue for our residents in these areas. Unlike others who tell them what they should do, we will allow our professionals to do what they were trained to do; find solutions and alternatives and make recommendations,” she pointed out.
