ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A Lower Estate man confessed in the Magistrate's Court to purchasing a phone allegedly stolen from a car that was parked at the UP’s cinema complex sometime last year.

Trumayne Daway, 20, pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards on May 24, 2013.

According to the allegations read by Crown Counsel Herbert Potter, on April 10, 2012 at about 11:18 P.M. the Virtual Complainant (VC) of Sabbath Hill reported to the Road Town Police Station that his vehicle was broken into while it was at UP’s parking lot.

The VC reportedly went to the cinema around 7:45 P.M. to watch movies and when he returned at 10:45 P.M., he discovered his left front car window was smashed and his laptop bag containing a laptop valued at $600, a maroon British Passport, a chequebook, iPod touch valued at $300, Nokia phone valued at $200, Panasonic camera valued at $250 and other items were missing.

The Nokia phone was allegedly found in the possession of the defendant on April 17, 2012 and identified as the property of the VC by a crack on the phone and the serial number.

Daway was arrested on October 8, 2012 on suspicion of handling stolen goods and issued a caution statement, which was recorded. In the statement he allegedly said that he had traded an LG phone valued at $100 and paid an additional $20 to another person for the phone. He was subsequently charged and processed.

His attorney, Patricia Archibald-Bowers, requested leniency in light of her client’s guilty plea. She also requested a fine and short term of probation as sentencing. She also stated that the defendant had no priors and had an infant son.

Daway will return to court on June 21, 2013 for sentencing.

If it were not for people who buy or handle stolen goods, there would be no market for thieves to sell. Unfortunately we all like a bargain, and some turn a blind eye and ask no questions. There should be tough deterent sentencing on handlers of stolen goods, and we also need to play our part.

Is there anything that this guy did not leave in his car??? Stealing is wrong, but my god, how foolish can you be. And I know that he had to hear that they were breaking into cars by UP's. Probably left them in plain sight too. Almost $1500 worth of stuff lying around in your car at night. Wow.
