Lorna G. Smith condemns 'gunshots' heard during NDP’s political rally

Territorial At-Large representative and former First Lady, Lorna G. Smith running under National Democratic Party’s (NDP) 2023 political slate has condemned the sounds of gunshots heard during the Road Town campaign rally of Sandy M. Harrigan on Saturday, April 8, 2023. Photo: Facebook/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Territorial At Large candidate and former First Lady Lorna G. Smith, OBE, who is running on the National Democratic Party’s (NDP) 2023 political slate, has condemned the 'sounds of gunshots' heard during the Road Town campaign rally of Sandy M. Harrigan-Underhill on Saturday, April 8, 2023.

In a heated speech, the former first lady said the sounds of the gunshots are not something she is used to, having lived in the VI for most of her life and it is something that must change.

“I am a Fourth District person, but I don’t think any of us are deaf. We all heard those gunshots, didn't we? and we saw the police racing. Is this what the BVI has come to?” she asked.

Mrs Smith questioned whether the people of the VI were going to put up with more gunshots for another four years and beyond.

"This is not the country I know' - Lorna G. Smith

Mrs Smith sought to somehow connect the gunshots with the current Government, adding that an NDP Government will bring change in that area.

“This is not the country I know, that I have lived in all my life, except for my first seven years. We have to change this country, we have to take it back,” she said.

Meanwhile, it remains unclear the circumstances related to the gunshots heard during the political rally in Road Town.

Virgin Islands News Online reached out to a police source for information and was told while there were reports of gunshots, there was no location or injuries reported.

Our News Centre will bring more information as it becomes available.

Lorna Smith had nothing to do with the plane debacle. Her husband and the rest of the BVI government were deceived by a long time BVI lawyer and a bunch of con men who he was working for. They got the money. The Smith family got none. Fact.

Violent crime has no part in the community. The questions we must ask our selves is if the BVI has no gun manufacturer, how are the river of guns getting into flowing in the BVI? Perhaps, the guns are pouring in through the extensive porous borde with all the yachts plying the seas. Under whose purview does security falls. I s crime a new issue? Did not Mrs have 2 terms as de facto Premier? Doc was a superb medical doctor but a very poor politician. We must understand that being good in one thing does not make one good in other things. We try to use the halo effect in our politics. Politics is part art and part science. The art of politics is what challenge politcians, along with self-greed.

I pray she doesn’t win. This candidate knows people now that she is trying to get elected. Imagine she will walk over you before but all of a sudden she is trying to befriend everyone for the sake of a vote. Please people don’t vote for her. Big mistake if you do. She cares about herself and her circle of white friends in the financial services industry. They will love her to win so they can pull her strings like a puppet. Great pretender she is.

The people here doing all of these criminal acts have no respect for anyone. My beautiful Torola has become the wild Wild West East, north and south. The authorities are not doing their jobs not patrolling daily, only when something serious happened they show up.

Our perception of others usually stem from our mindset. I used to feel the same way about Mrs. Smith until I had the opportunity to speak with her over the years. What we don’t like about her is her direct and to the point way of dealing with matters. We get our feelings hurt and blame the person we feel is making us feel that when in actual fact, we control our feelings.
With our country in its present state we definitely need people who will be direct and no nonsense about important matters. People who will not be intimidated by the long standing politicians. No, I haven’t spoken to Mrs. Smith about this and no one asked me to respond to this article. I am concerned about our country and we need to be moving forward to better days and years ahead. I am concerned about our youngsters who deserve a future here and not a future riddled with crime where they fear for their lives. It is time to clean up. We need forward thinkers like Mrs. Smith, Sandy, Shaina, Mather…

    FEEL FAULKNER’S FIRE

    By Tafari Zharr

So you’re getting your Election and then people what’s the plan for the premier and the officers? WTH

I mean the COI and OIC recommendations still remain in force! The Monarch’s advisers, The Privy Council has taken a stance and together the appointed governor is also obligated.FWIW

You Cast Your Fears - against each other!
You sleep with one eye open for your brother and turn a blind eye to a stranger. I can’t with society chasers! LMAO

Sorry you’ve gotten your chance to hold a postponed election and begin to feel Faukner’s Fire - a ride that lasted 73 and 1/2 years come Election Day. Progress. Yes!

But is this Election different than the rest? Is it symbolic for something more intrinsic that we are about to lose because of what, we represent - an island with well-to-do-black men showing off and living it up the likes of which some subjects of Great Britain could never have imagined, not (about our sons of the soil) who we didn’t hold accountable? SMHO

We must absolutely cast our cares and stop caressing our egos. This is not basketball but if it were you let a player came out of nowhere and slam dunked on the brothers - imagine - in the Bubble - during the pandemic.ICYMI

Allegedly, Liz Truss shot her shot in UK politics and forced an offensive foul soon after putting direct rule on the table. It’s almost as if she threw a rock , broke a window, and ran. IMHO.

Meanwhile, allegedly, Ms Truss made her way across the pond thereafter trading her UK political ambitions for American prospects. YOLO

OTOH. What’s ironic was all this was happening as a locked up abroad, Brittney Griner griner42.com a real life WNBA player’s fate was up in the air with no resolve for the American black woman to get home. Her fears involved punishment.

Vincent Wheatley- seems to Feel Faulkner’s Fire! That’s the measuring tape for who you ought to re-hire in Virgin Gorda. But if he is unable to secure the win May I suggest someone who has that burn- qualities that can challenge the status quo: A person who has a partnership with people, is Accountability, shows Balance in mastering results with humility, does not back down from the tasks and dares to show Courage, as he strives to Deliver promptly on promises. Vincent is committed to advancing all the people of the virgin island demonstrates positive with the possible in the way of what Endurance- looks like- - that already puts Ideas into perspective for at least one strong premier candidate - by now any elected official should be willing and able to step into that position which by the way - it’s a job - No more feather in caps - the time for hosting an office was the last election!

This Election is serious business and not a runway for “being in tings” no room for blind Loyalty. I feel a struggle between our treasured islands and the shaming of “tax havens; but any realization of taxation would have to be imposed by representation - currently possible only under direct rule or hostile takeover. IIANM.

But wait, VI Your Armageddon might very well be tied -not to your ballot box but - to your breadbox.

Finally, Will you elect one party! Or, pick the ABCD and mix it up. For those who have been inquiring, I am here now, but am a bit rusty with my predictive tools. JK

Early Vote for some April 20, general Election Day is April 24,2023.

ICYMI- In case you missed it - stay tuned to my commentaries in this local paper all Election season.

So many people are 6 feet in our territory because of gun violence yet you kept your mouth shut. May be just maybe if you had speak out at the time maybe just maybe some one might have listened and change their mind set. Please don't make us feel like fools. I know you are a brilliant woman and I have much respect for you but it's a pity it took the sound and a vote to bring this issue to the forefront.

No love lost my wonderful friend but we are vigilant and wise people in this territory. for it is even more critical than it has ever been. Let us all condemn wrong and elevate our thinking

That is cheap political statement by Lorna Smith. She reminds me of how the Europeans conquered he African Countries by spreading propaganda for invasion of the countries. Mrs. Lorna Smith should not have been allowed to contest as a candidate in the General Election. Can a Virgin Islander be allowed to contest for a seat in Anguilla. Where is the Attorney General to address this important issue. What is the view of the Governor in this matter. Let us seek the advice of the Pevey Council.

I just read Mrs Smith accomplishments and I must say I am impressed. She is by far qualified over the others and with a resume like hers she got my vote. BVI can no longer afford to be mocked as a light weight and have mediocre performances in the discussions among top officials world wide. With a resume like hers I can close my eyes and feel that BVI will be represented well
I don't know her personally but I am going with her experience.

How Lorna Smith is allowed to Contest a seat in the House of Assembly in the Virgin Islands and she was born in Anguilla. I wish some Legal practitioner could explain under what circumstances it happens here. This is the only island in the Eastern Caribbean where this is allowed. What makes one illegible and qualify to contest a seat here and no where else it is allowed. When one looks at the difficulty children who were born in the Virgin Islands has to obtain a Passport and this serious breach of the Constitution is allowed to go on. Hon. Mark Vanterpool did it before and it was swept under the rug.

I really don't know Mrs Smith but reading her platform gives me a better idea of her qualification. As a country we have to put aside our differences, grudges and dislikes and vote her in. Just looking at all what she achieved brings me great comfort. Everybody is not perfect, we all have flaws and we all can learn ever day but for how my poor BVI is the laughing stock around the world we need someone like Mrs Smith who is an iron lady and will stand up for the BVI. Heaven knows she can't be any worst than the list of candidates, some of whom can't even speak where one can understand, let us do what's best for the BVI rather than voting in inexperience people in this very serious time, BVI is being watched closely, we need to regain our credibility and knowledge and experience will give us a big push. Yes, I have my BH Degree, right there from what was known as Cottage Hospital so when I say what I say it's for the yearning of a better BVI

The thing that baffles me is that people who running for politics appear at your door asking for votes. You have never seen them before and are unlikely to see them after they’re elected. Point here? If you want to be a politician, plan way ahead. At least 2 years in advance. Go out, get to know the people, the issues so that you will be known when elections come around. As a voter and BVI Nationalist, I don’t have a clue who to vote for this election. Just no impressed by the candidates.
