KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Ms Lorie A. Freeman, Director of the Virgin Islands Social Security Board (SSB), has been appointed to the Control Commission of the International Social Security Association (ISSA) as Titular Auditor.

According to a press release from the SSB on December 15, 2025, Freeman’s appointment came following elections at the World Social Security Forum (WSSF), which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from September 29 to October 3, 2025.

Over 2000 attendees from more than 130 countries gathered to discuss how social protection systems can adapt to demographic shifts, labour market changes, climate risks and digital transformation.

Freeman was among the 27-member delegation from the Caribbean at the World Forum. Along with Freeman, Ms Tasha K. Bertie, Permanent Secretary to the Minister for Health and Ms Maya M. Barry, Member of the Board of Directors, attended the forum.

I am honoured to serve

As Titular Auditor, Freeman will supervise the financial affairs of the Association, ensuring compliance with ISSA regulations and its code of transparency.

Her nomination and subsequent appointment signal the Social Security Board’s commitment to contributing to the global standards of social protection, the press release added.

“I am honoured to serve in this capacity. This role presents a valuable opportunity to contribute to global dialogue, with the perspective and experience of the region. I intend to approach the work with diligence, and I look forward to the collaborative impact this experience will offer,” Freeman said of her appointment.

She also thanked her Caribbean colleagues who advocated for her nomination, and also to the ISSA Council for their confidence and trust.

Freeman was appointed Director of the Virgin Islands Social Security Board (SSB) on January 2, 2025, following confirmation in the House of Assembly.

A proud moment for VI

Chairman of the Board, Mr Glenroy A. Forbes, recognised Freeman’s appointment, adding that it is "a proud moment for the Virgin Islands and an integral step to advancing collaboration and innovation.”

In addition to Freeman’s election, the Social Security Board earned a Certificate of Merit from ISSA for its participation in the inaugural International Social Security Video Festival.

The Board’s submission celebrated the public education efforts of the 2024 ‘Secure Your Tomorrow’ Campaign.
