Local Vanessa K. Garraway appointed ESHS Principal
Virgin Islander Vanessa K. Garraway, a long serving educator at ESHS, has been appointed to the principal’s post.
According to reports reaching our newsroom, Ms Garraway was chosen from a long list of applicants that included persons from overseas and a former principal and political candidate.
Ms Garraway, who was the Deputy Principal and the Principal responsible for Senior Academics, was acting in the capacity of Principal following the resignation of Ms Sandy M. Harrigan-Underhill prior to the February 25, 2019 General Elections.
At the time Ms Garraway was reportedly not the choice of the then Minister for Education Mr Myron V. Walwyn, who was criticised for allegedly micromanaging the Ministry of Education and was blamed for the morale in public schools falling to an all-time low.
Senior sources in the Ministry of Education and Culture speaking, to our news desk on condition of anonymity back in January 2019, had alleged, “there was too much pressure against who the Minister really wanted” and subsequently a phone call was made to advise Ms Garraway that “she was in charge until, about February” or until further notice.
Prior to taking on administrative duties in various capacities at the Elmore Stoutt High School, Ms Garraway served as a teacher of Mathematics.
