ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Newly minted Virgin Islands Party (VIP) member, Honourable Alvera Maduro-Caines (R6) said the boldness of young ladies seen in a number of sexually explicit videos being circulated in the Virgin Islands is frightening her.

“I received some videos the other day, and I was really appalled by the boldness of our young ladies…and, they are performing these acts with older men, and the boldness frightens me,” she said at a press conference at Village Cay Marina on Monday.

Hon Maduro-Caines said something must be done to assist these young ladies.

“I call upon mothers and single parents to form a group, some kind of help group for the young ladies because the pornography is at a sky-high. It is not something the legislation probably can fix, but if it is proven that these men are a lot older than these ladies, then legislation can fix it. But, it is rampant, and it has gone sky high, and I have never seen it like this,” she remarked.

Legislation can fix it!

Wasting no time, Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) said with the new changes to the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crime Act, perpetrators will be brought to justice.

“Our legislation with the Cyber Crime which we are waiting for it to be assented to can help …because when you help share those videos you will get fined, and you will go to jail,” he said.

On August 2, 2019, during the House of Assembly (HoA), it was revealed that offenders could receive a maximum of seven years, a fine not exceeding $200,000 or both if found guilty at the Magistrate’s Court.

On the other hand, if found guilty at the High Court, the penalties are much higher. Offenders can face up to 14 years behind bars or be fined up to $500,000, or both if the Judge sees it fit.

The bill is now awaiting His Excellency Governor Augustus J.U. Jaspert’s assent to become law.

It's the technological age, get over it. Not condoning it but there's nothing happening now that wasn't happening 20 years ago except that now everyone has the ability to share/view/record things at a very high rate of speed. Either we turn into China and start regulating everything, or we accept that this is all part of the so called 'progress' and technological 'advancements' in the world. Parents need to teach their kids well, set examples and set boundaries. Other than that we will continue to see young people idolize the persons they see on social media and mimic all the rubbish they see.

@fools: just because a person can video tape intimate moments does not mean they have to do it. It seems posting such videos (do posters have written consent from all involved?) is about men boasting about their conquests. Nasty behavior that IMHO has no place in society regardless of what laws there may or may not be.

With economic growth comes the good, bad and ugly. Fixing the bad and ugly will take the community/village and legislation. There is already legislation on books for adults having sexual relations with minors and the legislation must be vigorously enforced. The Village, whole village, not just a few warriors , the community must get engaged, not looking the other way and taking a no nonsense attitude towards abuse and exploitation of young boys and girls. In the past, Village was self policing, setting and enforcing standards. Today, many don’t know who their neighbors are and many could give a rat’s ass who their neighbors are. Cry for the Village. To the hard t...e men, leave the people gayl chiren alone; homos leave the people young boys alone. The Village is back and watching you.

For the peanuts amount of money you all send us away to school with on scholarships, leaving us to scringe until completion. What else do you expect from us. You all spend money on so much meaningless things, and when it comes to education, we get the vomit/rest of what's left from the budget. Us females in the states stripping and doing porn, and the males hustling selling drugs. Some of us have to run to the local banks to make up for the balance that you all could fully well give us for scholarships. And then the banks home want us to start paying the money back even before you finish. But you all can find the money to give full scholarships in curry-favor to who you want and then they don't return to the territory.

Oppression a Sin. Victimization a Sin. Corruption a sin. Stealing a Sin.. Fornication a sin.... Lying a sin.... Because we think that our sons are safe in the dark so we quick to judge and condemned those sons in the light.... We all doing something wrong... But because it's in the dark and private we think we are righteous and have the right to judge...

Give better scholarship packages and students will stop resorting to other means of income. Down there wasting the government money on nonsense and we up here, don't have a dime to catch the bus, muchless money to put food in our cabinets. It's only the grace of God why I ain't gone to strip yet.

So you all don't have families that can help...or can't get a part-time job (besides porn/stripping) to supplement scholarship funds? If going abroad to study is that bad, why not use the opportunities here locally with a college and a university, and online sources as well? If you have to debase yourself for a piece of paper saying you are educated, that's terrible. Maybe that's why some of the educated folks are so miserable and spiteful, is it because they had to degrade themselves for the piece of paper? But nobody is forcing you to do such. That's your choice. Consider the consequences before you get on that bandwagon. Nuff said.

This ain't no joke. It's much deeper than we have it to be trust me. I struggle to finish school financially too. And I ain't no female. I budget my money properly but it still don't cut it. The government give me a partial scholarship too. Give thanks but I know they could have done better. Me and a lot of my colleagues had the same cry. We use to pad up to help each other and sometimes we still didn't have nothing. Right now there is a local athlete attending school in the US Virgin Islands doing this same thing. And all the government don't care about nothing else but to show up at every graduation and hold up the BVI flag. No concern about what happened to us before and during but they dress up nicely for a picture to be posted on VINO and Facebook. We are opening the doors to all kinds of sickness and diseases. What is going to happen when word gets around on the AIDS rate for the country. Do you think that people will want to continue to visit us? Think about it. We rely heavily on tourism. Sometimes we have to think. And sometimes the problem starts with something as innocent as school. We got to do better

I blame the government. These partial scholarships ain't cutting it all all mehson! You sending students away to places where they can't even work to make up for the rest. But sending your ministers away on business trips. Hotel, transportation, meals, spending money. Money to $hit and money to wipe! But it's country above self right? More like yeah right!

These people coming on here blaming government for helping them with partial scholarships and not giving them enough man look man nobody have to give you all nothing.if you find you not getting enough come home work like every other person who wasn’t given any scholarship at all put you money together then go pay for your school yourself. This is sickening how these ungrateful students thinking. People make choices everyday if you want to go school to better yourself just know that you will have to make sacrifices it is not a vacation so don’t expect it’s going to be smooth sailing straight through. Take what you getting and be thankful some ain’t get nothing at all and had to pay their own way.

There are too many students who get Belonger Status because their mothers marry Virgin Islander men only for status so their children can benefit. Too much exploitation of Virgin Islands Government and it's people.
