Local designer to debut clothing line in USA
Darryll P. Bess a is known mainly around the VI as one of the few young men in the business of fashion designing and has a passion and unique flare he puts into his work. It is not surprising that he has been invited to represent the VI on the international scene as his work certainly stands out.
Courtesy of an invitation from the US based Caribbean Fashion Style (CFS), Bess will be heading off to Miami this May to showcase the VI with his line of clothing under the brand BayRoc Clothing.
In an exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online, Mr Bess said his choice of clothing for the Miami/Caribbean Fashion Show will be all white as he intends “to make the designs stand out more.” He said that being invited to the international stage is a big break for him as it has always been his dreams to venture beyond the borders of the Virgin Islands and the wider Caribbean.
“This is a great opportunity for me and I was really very delighted when I got the call about participating in the USA.” He said his colleague Kristen Frazer was also invited but will not be attending because of a prior set commitment for another fashion show.
The Caribbean Fashion Show in Miami features designers from almost all the Caribbean countries and is usually a major annual event in the USA. It has been credited for giving Caribbean designers a major break on the international scene.
In the meantime, as he has his heart set on hitting the international stages, Mr Bess' designs have been hitting the international markets having recently created an online marketing drive, www.bayrocclothing.com. “Since I opened up the site sales have been very good and when I return from Miami I will be working at having my pieces in the UMI showcase for sale," Mr Bess stated.
It has always been his big dream to participate in the largest fashion show in the Caribbean, “Fashion Week” which is held annually in Jamaica. “I have always wanted to take my creations to that show so I reached out to them and was very happy when I got the green light,” said Bess. His choice of design for the Jamaica leg will more feature the colours of the summer, including light pink, blue, green and yellow.
“It’s something I had wanted to do since August last year (2012) and I started making a move towards it in November (2012).” He said participating in the two countries means, “More buyers, getting my clothing line out there and just more exposure.”
Despite having a regular day job, Mr Bess still finds the time to exercise his passion for fashion design. “If you love something from the heart you will always find the time to do it.”
Bess revealed that he is being supported by the Government of the Virgin Islands as he prepares to head off to Miami in May 2013.
