ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A local businessman, who always has his eyes and ears open to the happenings in his beloved Virgin Islands, has said the United Kingdom (UK) sponsored Commission of Inquiry (CoI) appears one-sided and aimed at bringing down the 2-year-old Andrew A. Fahie-led Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government.

Brother Abdul Shabazz, in an exclusive interview with Virgin Islands News Online, also cautioned the Opposition to be mindful to not give the CoI any ammunition that could bring about a negative outcome for the territory.

‘CoI is one-sided’

The CoI was called by ex-governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert, who was accused of trying to bully the democratically elected VIP Government and resisting moves designed to empower locals and prepare the VI for self-determination.

“I am concerned that the CoI is one-sided and I am wondering what is the agenda?” Brother Shabazz told VINO on September 2, 2021.

Many have been questioning the neutrality and fairness of the CoI, especially with it not allowing witnesses to be cross-examined.

Brother Shabazz was asked if the CoI seemed to be more directed at the VIP government rather than being called in the spirit of the UK doing good by its Overseas Territory.

“It seems so, it seems so, it would be a good thing if the overall agenda is for the benefit of the nation, for the good of the people, that would be a good thing, but if it has an agenda of rotten politics that is bad, and it seems that way,” the businessman responded without hesitation.

‘We must be careful about tearing down each other’

It was due to this concern that Brother Shabazz called on the Opposition led by Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) to be careful not to let their politics give ammunition to the CoI.

“I am saying we must be careful about tearing down each other in the midst of an adversary. It could be bad for us.”

Brother Shabazz suggested that the Opposition has been unnecessarily slugging away at the VIP Government at a time when politics needed to be put aside.

He said the pressure that the Opposition seems to be piling on the Government in this difficult time is also what has him concerned.

“For a long time we had many issues yet things have not been inquired about. What’s the problem now? Why now all of a sudden everything is now being laid to the foot…

“I am not for or against a political party government but my instinct is showing me and making me feel like it is too much unkempt politics that is destroying us.”

He said initially when he heard the Opposition Leader speak on issues he would admire his take and his position.

“But the more I listen and the more I digest what I am hearing and what has been put forward, my instinct kind of telling me this seems to be one-sided. And I question the agenda.”

He said there were so many things that occurred under the NDP government, such as the BVI Airways deal, the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) wall project and the ESHS buildings under construction that collapsed during the September 2017 hurricanes, but an Inquiry was never called then.

“These things make me start to feel that something is behind the agenda that is not for the good for the people and I start to feel, it looks to me like it is designed to bring down a political government."

Absolutely’ no to UK takeover- Shabazz

Shabazz reiterated that the Opposition must be careful not to play into the hands of the CoI.

“Mr Penn and brother Fraser we must be careful about the tug of war among ourselves. It gives the necessary ammunition to defeat, because divide and conquer is a strategy and this is why it bothers me that we say oh the inquiry is something good but if it is one-sided and if it is a demeaning agenda that is bad,” Brother Shabazz said.

The businessman said that while he “wouldn’t jump to that conclusion” of a UK takeover on the agenda, he is against a UK takeover.

“No, not at all, absolutely not!” Brother Shabazz loudly exclaimed.

      Obviously a fake rubber duck.
Btw, why is this called an “exclusive interview “?
It’s not like anyone else wants to interview him.
When I get my roti at Crandall’s I don’t have an exclusive conversation with the people there. I just talk with them.

Surely, the Good Brother must remember the questions regarding the BVI Airway deal? It's not one sided, unless you only listen to one side!

Abdul Shabazz I must respect your views. However the COI didn't just today or whenever it was announced. England long gather their intelligence and information which led to where we are now. The rest is history. Check TCI.

If by your words no one was different than the other the question is why now, why now that there is a strong government determined to increase local freedoms and domestic revenue streams

rather than the past administration being seen as out of reach suits working to imitate the elite similar to the “animal farm”.

Why is the COI not looking into the positive impact on the community in this short time of this new government?

Why are they determined to find breaches and the like while not looking into what has been done right?

Seems they prefer yes men & overly cautious to the point of cowardly government administrations.

It’s happening now because ( to use your Orwell argument) all governments are corrupt but some are more corrupt than others.

It’s such a shame that some of them come out and talk about freedom fighting to see what they can get out of it and when the side that gives to them is in trouble they do not want to see them brought to justice , what about all the poor people who was done wrong by all of those who raped this country for all these years whose friends and family were the ones who benefited because of the positions that they held and the law was not above them because of their names and status there were so much of us who worked so so hard to make a difference in our lives and our families who started a little business and had to go out there and compete against those and as much as we try we were denied even when our prices were better than those we were denied time snd time again because we were not good enough well I am going to say to you dhabazz snd the rest the white man was never in the position to cause us no pain and suffering in this country it was a set of our own who let us down over snd over again now all I will ask is to let justice take its course whoever did wrong let them pay the price they were happy when we were suffering by their hands god don’t sleep.

The slave masters/colonialists effectively used the divide and rule strategy to control and keep slaves enslaved. Another effective control strategy was the prohibition of slaves learning to read and write. Keep them dumb and you control them. Moreover, there was mistrust among house negroes, yard negroes and field negroes. Consequently, there few successful planned revolts against the dehumanizing, brutal……etc treatments. Some negro always alerted slave owners about the planned revolt.(s). And even after hundred of years, the divide and rule strategy, ie, crab in bucket mentality, is alive and well in the VI. Looking deeper, slaves were considered even full human beings. They were looked upon as a defective specie with limited mental ability and capacity. Consequently, persons of African descent are not viewed as strong and effective leaders and managers. For example, the quarterback position on a National Football League (NFL) team is viewed as a leader/mental position. And up to a few decades ago, there was a dearth of Black quarterbacks in the league. Was it that Blacks did not have the skill sets or something else? Well, today there are a slew of Black quarterbacks in the NFL.

Continuing......are politicians in the UK that are, perhaps, corrupt and exhibit unethical behaviors that should invoke a commission of inquiry? Yes. The performance of all governments, including the BVI, should be independently evaluated periodically. The problem is that when a commission of inquiry is commissioned for evil, egregious and malicious intent to get even with someone(s). This is unprofessional and an abuse of power. Undoubtedly, the UK should periodically evaluate the performance of its OTs. But when a commission of inquiry is weaponized to meet a personal agenda, that is above the pale. Sometimes I get the impression that there is perhaps a tinge of jealousy by UK officials on the standard of living in the BVI, along with other OTs. I’m not saying that the BVI or any other OT should not be evaluated for bad behaviors and poor performance. But there is something rotten in Denmark with this current commission of inquiry. The former guv (AJUJ) should be a shame of himself and should be call upon to account for his action. But hell will quicker freeze over first before that happen, for birds of a feather flock together.

@local tourist, Are we living on the same Island? this is what you said: Why is the COI not looking into the positive impact on the community in this short time of this new government? First of all there isnt much positive impact to look at, but there is a lot of corruption to look at. This goverment is taking the BVI to a new low.

@Me Timeas, Why do you people keep comparing us to the UK and other countries, we want what's right for our country to hell with the other countries. It's time that these politicians are stopped from ripping off the people; tell us when is a good time to do that. The best thing for the BVI is for the UK to take us over and clean up this place and have a new election and rule out the past and present politicians because we all know all of them promise us the moon but only give it to their friends and family.

Look, they wanted COI they got it! Unfortunately, it's a Freshman Government with few Senior Legislative Members. Also, there is too much outside intervention by Non Political Forces who appears to be in it for Self and not for the Territory and its People. Somebody is under heavy scrutiny and All will perish by lack of Standing and Speaking Out! ( My Views)

Why is everyone so clear on what shouldn’t be shared with Sir Gary and not clear that we need an honest non corrupt government that looks after the people of the BVI?
Four years since Irma but the state of the place you would think it was last year
Rubbish old boats roads that you can’t drive .. the list is long. COI might help get our money spent to help us not line pockets of the law lot or the government

All we doing is bashing them because of some little mistake . Everyone think they know it all . Pray for those in authority what ever religion youre in.
