Local boxing card entertains crowd at UPs
Patrons were not disappointed as the boxers showed much enthusiasm, skill and heart, if not always stamina, with the main event seeing Virgin Islands resident and boxing instructor Julian Brown displaying much class to get the judges nod against the game South African Marcus Rodriguez in their middleweight encounter.
Brown’s constant head movement, backed up with his flashing left hook, did the trick for him as the more strongly built Rodriquez couldn’t get in the big shots he was looking for.
Both men, however, displayed a high level of boxing skills, much to the pleasure of those in attendance.
The boxing coach, Brown, was keen on counter punching and connected consistently with his swift left hook and stiff jab that had Rodriquez with a bloodied nose throughout most of their six-round contest.
Brown said Rodriquez was a good opponent even though he (Brown) held back a little.
Not everyone seemed pleased with the scorecards but Rodriquez was gracious in defeat, telling Virgin Islands News Online he had no issues with the decision. “Julian was the better man tonight but I would love to do this again,” Rodriquez said.
Destroyer overcomes Detonator!
The heavyweight contest, which had promised much fireworks between Andrew ‘The Destroyer’ Lettsome and Glenroy ‘The Detonator’ Charles lived up to the hype as the big men seemed intent on crushing each other.
Both men showed that they can pack a punch as well as take one as there were no knockouts despite both fighters connecting a few big punches and whaling away at their opponent whenever given the opportunity.
Charles seemed to be more on the receiving end although he often dared Lettsome to keep coming. At one point he was backed up to the ropes from a flurry of punches by Lettsome that he fell out of the ring that proved too weak to hold the fighters' weight. Charles burst back into the ring indicating to the referee that it was not a knock down, much to the amusement of the audience.
The judges scored in favour of Lettsome who was unofficially named the middleweight champion of the Virgin Islands.
Fast arms prevail over long arms
Bantamweight D’moi Martin showed that heart was a main character of a boxer when he came up against the long reaching Jhkoy Pemberton who began the fight by sticking out his jab and keeping Martin out for most of the first round.
In the second round, however, Martin was often able to get in a few good shots that seemed to throw Pemberton off his game. The fight was then getting interesting when Martin threw a solid shot to the mid chest of Pemberton who then indicated he couldn’t continue.
Other results
Earlier, Romario Morgan of Cane Garden Bay scored a TKO win over Rico Rios of Carrot Bay. Both fighters looked to be in good shape and traded shots early in the fight before Morgan began to dictate. The fight ended in the third round when Morgan connected with a left handed blow to the right rib cage of Rios who in pain told the referee he had enough.
The first TKO victory of the night was secured by Kevin Chinnery over Tyrell Grant. The fight began with early exchanges and much energy and ending with Chinnery having to be paid a visit by the ring doctor for an apparent injury to his lip.
Chinnery came back strong in the second round with a series of attacks on Grant but had to wait until the third round to secure his victory when Grant surrendered, apparently out of exhaustion more than anything else.
In other fights, Rasheed Clarke got the better of David Persaud and Kamari Bowers of Carrot Bay scored a win over Daniel Singh of Belle Vue.
